Hearing and Listening is not the same thing...

The late great Clive Bradley once said there’s a difference between hearing and listening, now is our chance to judge our listening skills. I know this is a subjective exercise, for the music experts you can do the analysis. Here's a playlist of the leading contenders in a user friendly format...

  • Fantastic! Thanks for doing this.

  • Okay! Okay! Boogise is a MUSICAL GENIUS.

Time for him to take his act to the GLOBAL STAGES like Narell and Scales!!!

  • Panorama has evolved from an audio event to an audio-visual event. While we all enjoy the latter on Finals night my major problem is marks are only given for the audio NOT the visual.........BUT the visual has a determining factor psychologically on both the patrons and the judges hence unjust results. My practice has been Carnival Sunday in particular I listen to only the audio and trust me Bradley's statement becomes true: we hear (and see) on Saturday night; we listen on Sunday.

All Stars is not just known but is identified for their highly choreographed "performing skills" Other bands don't stress this importance. Were marks awarded for that we would certainly see a change.

Sadly, as it currently stands this visual "no-marks" reality continues to be the thumb on the scales for All Stars.

In the days of yore, music won......music!

  • He plays less notes and get more music, that's pure magic, only a genius can do that. I would be very angry if the judges don't listen to what he did. I see shades of High Mass in the "rama"

    • Cecil you keep harping on Boogsie's alleged "less notes" policy as part of his being labeled a genius.

Did you listen to Jit's arrangement of Guitar Pan in 1997? There were, in my view, more notes played on the three and four pan cellos together with the quads and guitar pans, than whole arrangements of some of the other bands of that year.

From your implication, I should then deduce that Jit's "more notes" makes him a cretin, right?

In Trumpian fashion, Cecil Wrong! Simply a wrong argument.

Bugs implied  in earlier days he used more notes - quite true - he always had then a sermon within a sermon.....what I called 'straying'.

His music certainly over the last decade has been more clear, innovative and distinctively identifiable. His greatest work for me was "Jump High" in the recent past.

      • A.L.Nunes, I harp on Boogsie playing less notes because others feel that they have to play many notes to produce a winning arrangement, and this was the norm for years, he has proven it does not have to be so.

      • A.L.Nunes, Sharpe music speaks for itself, what he does is pure genius, he want his music to be different so he is willing to step outta the box, other than Zanda what you have is the same old, same old.

      • Boogsie's best in the last few years is still Music in Meh Blood...perfect in every way...

  • Excellent ODW

What jumps out at you immediately is the different styles of the bands.

All students of Panorama arranging should do some critical listening to Phase II. And all you steelband directors all over the world you be in Phase II's yard and at Boogsie's feet taking notes.

Len "Boogsie" Sharpe has moved from genius level to pure greatest.  The spreads of his chords across the the full orchestra is fascinating. His voicings are unique. Boogsie sense of rhythm and melodic content remains cutting edge stuff. He doesn't use as many note as he did in his younger days but he just as effective. He is a Master now that is approaching Bradley level in his understanding of the use of harmony vs doubling for volume to cut through.  And most importantly, he has mastered the art of silence.   I just wish he was also doing "Good Morning" so folks could immediately experience the genius of Boogsie and understand why he from another planet.

    bugs

  • Odw not one single band have completed their tune of choice and the required 8 mins. All 14 large bands are automatically going to the Semis. These bands were only giving the prelims judges a taste of what is coming and in turn the arrangers will make the necessary adjustments based on judges suggestions . Some people here done already picking winners and I notice not all the large bands are on your list. Let's wait on the Semis before we all past judgement.
