Minister Nyan Gadsby Dolly is not responsible for pan people’s remittance. Happy panorama to all.

By Aquil Arrindell

Our president told members, at last week Tuesday’s meeting for single-pan bands, that he is going on Wednesday morning to NCC to fight for pan people’s money. He also said that the pan players’ remittance is at the sole discretion of the Minister Nyan Gadsby Dolly. Bandleaders, note that our president continuously lies to you for his political survival. An allocation was given to Pan Trinbago of 20.5 million and in that allocation the president and the executive are supposed to budget for everything, including players’ remittance. In 2016, the allocation was roughly 30.1 million and Pan Trinbago made the decision to pay players $1000.00 for prelims and $300 for semis which has still not been paid. That decision had nothing to do with the minister. I was a part of the decision making process as an executive member. In 2016, I, still being part of the executive, was in discussion to reduce pan players’ money to $500 dollars because of a cut in the allocation, which left PT with $25 million for 2017. However, they proposed that the prize money remain the same. Two people disagreed to that proposal, myself and Cindy Rosemin, both of whom resigned not too long after. Our stance was that the small man (pan people) should not have to feel the brunt of the burden alone. We proposed that there be an equal reduction for everyone so we could make the burden lighter of all stakeholders. We calculated that the pan players should be paid $750. that year.

Cindy’s and my views could not be popular with the executive because a cut in prize money would mean a cut in bands 10% contribution. Those collections by the president and the executive have allegedly been used to pay…

  1. themselves honorariums as high as $80,000.00;
  2. their financial advisor $150,000.00 every three months;
  3. the president’s salary (under $30,000.00) each month;
  4. a trustee who is getting two salaries for sitting outside Pan Trinbago’s office all day smoking cigarettes;
  5. for two imported cars, for which the president’s friend collected his money and the organization has no vehicle to show;
  6. the external officer and the public relations officer for the rental of vehicles whilst collecting $5,000.00 for travelling…

and the list goes on, so much so that we are now $30 million in debt. PT cannot find a way to justify taking 10% of pan people’s remittance yet, so their plan is to not use any of the money allocated for Panorama to pay pan people.

The exploitation would only stop when you decide to stop it. Bandleaders, remember your president lies continuously. Don’t let him and his executive blame NCC or the minister for pan men’s remittances.

There are no finances in the rules for 2018, just a promise by the president that the prizes would remain as they were in 2017. However, what it does have in writing is a clause saying that the payments would be determined according to what money NCC gives to them. This is a tricky one as the alleged 6 million that Pan Trinbago owes NCC might be taken out of the 20.5 million.

I do hope we all have a successful panorama for the bandleaders’ sake but the greatest concern is that after we work hard to make panorama successful, this executive, knowing their days are numbered, will now have the replenished treasury of pan men’s money to clear out before they vacate office.

Happy Panorama to all.

    • This picture was taken before Rolly Polly realized there was a new sheriff in town named Dr. Dolly. And the involuntary financial diet the good Doctor would put him on would cause him severe weight loss - not to mention unscheduled trips to Berlin.

      “In 2016, when we faced the scenario of $2.7 million with the band coming from Tobago, I get stick, I get lash, I get hit left, right and centre and that is a problem for 2018 right now.”

      Claude who giving ya boy licks so?  Who is smiling now?

    • good day gentlemen just keep you in the loop.

      It is panorama madness going on.

      now the thing with the players is rather interesting.

      bands who do really have a functioning stage side during the year not getting players because it don't have any menetary incentive.

      However bands who have a continues music program in their yards, the youths coming out, they want to play. Bands who are sponsored are also doing well with recruiting players.

      what are your thoughts on that?

      • Aquil, Lack of players to start-up might be the new norm because of how many bands there are, by the time the semis comes around and the foreigners arrive things might not be as bad.

        • Cecil, I know that some foreign players may not have indicated their interest in playing pan and may just turn up to play.  How do you think that will impact on the remittances?
