Global - One thing Trinidad and Tobago Panorama 2016 will be remembered for, is the great ‘new’ music each of the big boys - large conventional steel orchestra (large band) category - embraced on their journey to Panorama Champion Gold. Making a big statement with the tunes they have chosen as Tunes of Choice for 2016 - you can hear them screaming - “been there, seen that, done that,” - no time for “retro” tunes.

  • I feel like Rudder got too esoteric with the lyrics. He even disregarded the R-H-Y-M-E!!!

    • Claude I went and re-read the lyrics. You are right he did disregard rhyme. He didn't want to work that hard. But it is still a great tune for Exodus.

      • Bugs: I always listen to lyrics first and melody second. It is also interesting that the song is titled 'DE BIG YARD'' but referenced as "THE BIGGEST YARD" in the calypso.

      • David Rudder’s is known as the "lyrics man” in the industry, one has to examine his body of work to understand rhyming is not a big thing for him "High Mas" is a good example. When NU Tones with Bradley won Panorama 98, they said it was not a calypso but a hymn (religious song).

When Rudder first broke on the scene he was accused of not singing calypso they called it calypso SONG, one well known calypsonian sang about the threat to calypso with the quacks and invalids. I’m sure Pelham will work his magic as he always does.

        • I love David , and have much respect for his body of work.

He's certainly one of the alltime greats.

Never had a problem with his rhyme ,but I've sometimes felt that his earnestness and social conscience got in the way, making some of his lyrics too preachy, and took some of the fun out of his calypsos.

Not that I have a problem with socially conscious lyrics , mind you , but I've always felt they should be balanced, which the great Bob Marley knew.

Ironically , that was not the case with "High Mass", which certainly wasn't preachy!

        • Actually, odw, QUACKS AND INVALIDS is one of my favorite calypsos.

Singing ah set ah ta ta ta

Because people clap dey think dey is supersta

Actually, I think ROSE by Sparrow was the first calypso that was labeled a CALYPSONG. I will have to do some digging on that one.

  • WST has emerged the source for the "PAN TUNE" I could only see it getting better. CONGRATULATIONS.
