New Steel Pans for Carriacou and Petite Martinique

Carriacou, Petite Martinique, Grenada, W.I. -  Though Local Government is not yet fully implemented, the Local Government Office through the initiative of Permanent Secretary Bernadette Lendore-Sylvester was able to secure funding from the Grenada Electricity Services for a set of new steel pans.

In a presentation ceremony held at the Harvey Vale Resource Centre, PS Sylvester was elated to receive the pans from John McDonald, Branch Manager of the Grenada Electricity Services.

Getting the pans from Trinidad was no easy feat. However, through Mrs. Sylvester’s persistence they are now here and available for teaching the steel pan program which was introduced to the primary schools three years ago.

  • Arising out of the experience in the efforts to ensure the Permanent Secretary's 3-4yr request for instruments was fulfilled is my view that we in Trinidad (maybe Tobago) need to improve upon our level of customer service when coming to the sale, marketing, education on and delivery of steelpans.

  • I feel honoured to have played a significant role in having assisted the respective Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Lendore-Sylvester, from 2010 until the shipment left Trinidad. It was indeed an ardious task despite the instruments having been sourced and shipped from my country --"The Mecca of Pan".

In an attempt to ensure the instruments were received in good fate notwithstanding many ups and downs on Trinidad's end, I visited Carriacou from December 21 to Jan 7, 2012, and got a first-hand experience of the joy brought to the people of Carriacou.

The main benficiaries of the ensemble -- students of some primary schools -- and all other Carriacouans, were enthralled by the mere sight of the spread of chromed and electric blue powder-coated instruments further enhanced by a flaming red, glittered drum set.

I left the island feeling a sense of pride as Carriacou felt a sense of pride. It gave me great pleasure to addresss the young panninstson the rudiment and discipline attached to being a successful and professional pannist as it related to behaviour, discipline, the history of pan, the care of the instrument and the sticks, and the potential of the instrument.

As the point person in Trinidad assigned by the PS to liaise with Pan Trinbago to ensure her request was executed, I take this opportunity to personally thank the Grenada Electric Company for their contribution to the artform in anticipation of continued partnership with Pan Trinbago and by extension, Trinidad & Tobago.

    Regards!
