Roland says "Panorama has evolved and we need to embrace the change"
However the rules and criteria by which the panorama competition is adjudicated has not really changed over the years. Are the judges simply not with the times and incompetant or does the public need to go to judging school?
Lets face it Panorama has changed the style etc it seems that we now have to include showmanship not only in the standard of the music . We are now catering to a display of theatre ,and dance, the sequences, the dress code, the visual, special effects and the music in there somewhere. If thats the case then we have to consentrate on hiring cheographers and combine the two to produce what is now to be called the Theatrical Sounds of Pan. I loved Carlton Alexander's performance of Radica with the band from Tobago Steel Xplosion . That was real sweet music, you could feel that music in your bones, phasing, dynamics, melodic content and arrangement. I still love Valley Harps too and Michelle 'girl' its only a matter of time, not leaving out Mr Arddinn Herbert of Invaders you are the future of pan and I am watching your progress. It seems somehow that I am destined to always like the music of Mr Boogsie Sharpe, his style, and again the sweetness of the music, for I truly think he is a genius. After all of this I congratulate Silver Stars, and look forward to Panorama 2011. Congratulations to all the bands the hard work and dedication. Thank God for Pan.

is it because your band did not win.sometimes we need to put ourselves in the judges shoes..just as the event has evolved so too have the other bands..everyone is not stepping up to the plate....lets not always bash the judges..lets sit with them and hear what they hear on the night..remember its a one time short on the night..u not judging what u have heard but what u are hearing on the night..

Panorama has not really grown for the better, it grew but it appears it grows in a wrong direction. It has lost its natural appeal and has become too regimented and the loss of the "pre-panoramas" the ones succeeding the semis and finals is a lost for sure. Panorama was an event which had a natural mounting effect, which improved all the bands performances. Starting from the prelims (not in the yard) but in the savannah and mounting through the various pre-competitions. People must understand when you reduce the build up you also increase the amount of rejected bands and by doing this you increase the lack of confidence in the pan players and bands. This shortage of performances all started when the government announced the building of a new "grandstand". Added to this reduction of spirit, the sudden and uninformed charging of the masses will turn more and more people off of panorama. People wont worry to come next year. The pre competitions have to return or I would venture to say Panorama is slowly dying and the Government's attitude towards pan is responsible for this. Also there is no reason why one day in the whole carnival season pan bands can't come out and perform on the streets if not actually moving.
In terms of music, it is obvious the judges are looking at a more vibrant approach in terms of speed of the rendition more than harmonic presentation. So SilverStars had the speed for the last two years and Phase II had the harmonics. So the new formula is speed over harmonics.
I was lucky to attend Carnival 1976 and 1981 and have followed it since then. J'ouvert and Carnival Monday and Tuesday in those times was all big steel bands on"de road." Bring back steel bands on "de road."
Hey Sidd, just a short comment on your very last sentence. I do not think that there ever will be a clear cut formula of speed over harmonics. In the future, it is the bands that can find that sweet spot, that middle way, the perfect combination of harmonic an tempo that will thrive. It is one thing that history has taught us, and that is Panorama is in a constant state of change. Fads come and they go. The average life-span of any of these fads is about three years. Right now, tempo at full trottle is nothing more than the flavor-of-the-month. This will soon change because fads tend to have a very short shelf-life. In addition the judge's tastes also changes ever so often, that is why some band goes from dominace to dung-heap and cannot recover.
I have to agree with you, if BUGS band had one he would not be complaining about the judging, you got to win some and lose some.
The majority of listeners am sure was not familar with the songs that was being played, so it is very hard to know if a song was executed properly, these listeners that are talking about the judges are very BIAS.

PANORAMA HAS SOMEWHAT EVOLVED - HOWEVER IT IS A COMPETITION AND THERE MUST BE WINNERS AND LOSERS AND SUPPORTERS OF ONE BAND OR OTHER WILL NEVER BE PLEASED - THINK ABOUT THE PAST WHEN A BAND LOST BY HALF A POINT - THERE CAN BE A POINT OR NOT - THIS IS NOT MATHS CLASS - IN 1976- ONWARDS AS A PHASE TWO FROM DAY ONE PEOPLE USED TO ASK - WHO U LIKE???/ - PHASE 2 - THEY BEATING S--T - NO ONE KNOW THAT TUNE - BOY HAVE TIMES CHANGED - THAT IS WHY - WOMAN IS BOSS PHASE2 WILL ALWAYS BE BOSS AND BOOGSIE IS WAY ABOVE THE OTHERS - CARLTON ALEXANDER IS DIFFERENT ALSO - NEW TWIST - LONG LIVE D PAN - MORE NEEDED ON D ROAD FOR BOTH CARNIVAL DAYS
EVAN LOBO, SO TRUE, WE CANT TAKE COMPETION IN THIS COUNTRY . WE MUST LEARN HOW TO LOSE AND MOVE ON . THATS PROGESS. I LIKE TO COME BACK WITH DETERMINATION . GREAT DISCUSSION . HA HA AH LUV IT.
