Panorama has evolved and we need to embrace the change

Roland says "Panorama has evolved and we need to embrace the change"

However the rules and criteria by which the panorama competition is adjudicated has not really changed over the years.  Are the judges simply not with the times and incompetant or does the public need to go to judging school?

  • pan men will remain in a hole if the shit continues
  • Some time ago I raised the issue about moving Panorama away from Carnival , but my suggestion got no traction.

I am one those who believe that putting pan back on the road in a big way will not only benefit the steelband movement in T&T, but would also improve the Carnival itself.
As it stands, the panorama competition takes so much energy from the steelbands, there is no way they can participate in the panorama and also make a quality presentation on the road.

Like I said before, Panorama can stand on its own as a separate festival, freeing up the steelbands to prepare a repertoire of tunes that can make them a viable option to the DJs on the road.
Pan people will support Panorama whenever it is held.

Is anyone out there really willing to consider different ideas?
  • i agree with the fact that panorama is changed somewhat over the years in terms of dress code, style of tune of choice, dance, special effects and music. .....my thing is yes it has evolved but change the judging criteria too na. include theatrics and all dem kinda thing and not just 40 points for arrangement, 40 points for general performance, 10 points for tone and 10 points for rhythm.....pan has evolved but the judging criteria hasnt.
  • OF COURSE PANORAMA HAS EVOLVED, IF YOU LISTEN TO BOOGSIE'S BIRTHDAY PARTY (WHICH IN MY OPINION IS HIS BEST ARRANGEMENT EVER) AND YOU LISTEN TO PAN ARMY OR THIS ONE FOR YOU BRADLEY, YOU WOULD SEE AND HEAR A VAST DIFFERENCE. SILVER STARS GAVE THE JUDGES WHAT THEY WANTED AND WHAT THE CRITERIA ASKED FOR, THERE IS A COMPONENT IN THE SCORE SHEET THAT SAYS "SPIRIT OF CARNIVAL" AND THEY HAD THAT MORE THAN ANY OTHER BAND. FOR TOO LONG PLENTY BIG ARRANGERS, AND I HAVE PLAYED UNDER ALL OF THEM, DON'T REALLY TAKE ON THE JUDGES COMMENTS, BUT YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER, ITS A COMPETITION AND YOU HAVE TO GIVE THE JUDGES WHAT THEY WANT, AFTER ALL THEY DO HAVE THE FINAL SAY ON YOUR ARRANGEMENT.
    • CORRECTION...There is NO criteria under the judges scorecard for 'Spirit of Carnival'. There used to be one in the 70s I believe, but it was removed decades ago.
  • There is obviously no shortage of pan critics and experts. But maybe the time has come to ask ourselves: are competitions like panorama advancing the progress of steelband music?
It is my opinion that competitions only stiffle creativity and innovation because bands only tend to imitate the stylings of previous winners or what they think the judges may want to hear. How about a massive showcasing of bands with encouragment to express. That would ensure an evolving art form.
    • Despite its faults, nothing generates more interest in pan than TnT panorama. There will always be debate the day after. It is or imo should be primarily considered a music competition. When you listen to a band in their yard, without the stage lights, they should still sound like a winner based on the music and the execution of that music. As time passes, we may forget the stage performance, but we should still be able to listen to the arrangement and know why that band won based on the quality of the arrangement.
      • I couldn't have said it better.

    • Very good point, what we are also missing in this discussion and what I've heard repeated throughout the whole competition from the Primary schools on up is Pan is in good hands.
What we may end up seeing and most likely enjoying is more of the youth presentations in the Panorama. With the younger arrangers and these kids its not about theater and visual effects but fun and enjoyment and most of all Pan Music.
The juniors are coming and that's the real change I’m seeing take note of some of these bands that had some memorable performances and look at their names Starlift Youth, All Stars Youth, Tokoyo Youth, Southern Marines Steel Orchestra, Renegades Youth they are the ones who are going to change the outlook of Panorama to come.

      .
  • Here's my two cents. It has become apparent that the Panorama competition is evolving. There is no argument about that. In previous years, the emphasis was placed on musical arrangement according to a prescribed format. Now, however, Judges are looking for that added dimension, in every nuance of a band's presentation on stage. The Band, therefore, that most effectively dazzles the Judges with their on stage performance, wins the competition. It's that simple. What hasn't changed though, is the different ways in which some die hard supporters react to the Judges' decision. Everyone it seems, is an expert and feels that his or her band had been unduly robbed, if they fail to make it to winners' row. A change, therefore, in attitude where people are disciplined enough to graciously accept the Judges' decision as final, would be the most welcome change we can bring to the Panorama. We need to make a cultural shift and practice how to conduct ourselves, in a more civilized manner at competition. Congratulations to this year's champions and to every Band that made it to the finals. You are all winners in my book.
