Madd Music -- by Len “Boogsie” Sharpe lyrics by Nigel Rojas

"Keep the tape rolling. He reminds me of "Bird" (Charlie Parker) - you never know when he might do something magical." These were the words spoken to me (this writer) by the late great legendary jazz drummer Max Roach. At that time I was the engineer on a special project that Max was producing featuring Len "Boogsie" Sharpe. Max was so impressed with Boogsie's pan playing - he talked about bringing in the likes of Herbie Hancock and a host of other legends to surround Boogsie.

That was simply one genius recognizing the genius in another.

So what happens when you take a tune like "Madd Music" after it has been processed through the mind of Len "Boogsie" Sharpe, and placed in the musical sandbox of a world-class steel orchestra like Phase II Pan Groove for execution?

It is said with age comes wisdom - a greater understanding about the world, life and what one is about - mixed in with a heavy dose of fewer inhibitions.  The result is an amalgamation of life lessons and experiences for a singular purpose that define you. Interlock that wisdom and experience with the musical genius of Len "Boogsie" Sharpe through the sheer competence of Phase II Pan Groove, and you have the facility for magical moments in music.

  • Ah shock to see some HONEST PAN DISCOURSE on this forum. Usually the scales  are  tipped (HEAVILY TIPPED) to only ONE SIDE.

    • Señor Gonzales: It doe matter. Heptatonic. Pentatonic. Chromatic. We tipping all this year –– and more! And Leh we not forget we tipping we rum glass too. OK? (Forget Marlene.) :-)
  • With due respect to Boogsie and Phase II, after hearing them at practice last night, I'm convinced that the people charged with the responsibility of judging, are probably too young or oblivious to the fact that this is more of a cut and paste of our Brassorama of the past, and nothing new or creative. As someone commented to me, all he's missing in the band is a TROMBONE, as this was the instrument which brought out these music lines in our Brassorama Era.

THIS ISN'T MEANT TO OFFEND EITHER BOOGSIE OR THE MEMBERS OF PHASE II IN ANY WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Of course Boogsie's "F" jam rift is nothing new, but so is the 12-Bar blues, which is a staple of jazz music, (and nobody complains about it)…I would be careful to question it's "creativity" though since it is an accepted platform for calypso genre improvisation…just as the 2-5-1 and 1-6-2-5 chord progressions as well…It's not what you do in music sometimes but "how" you do it that makes a big difference...

      • But we are not talking about BLUES and JAZZ. We are talking about CALYPSO and PANORAMA. And frankly speaking, PANS cannot RECREATE that unique TRINIDAD CALYSPO FLAVOR that comes from BRASS.

        Waste of time!!!

          watch it again...

        • Also…since you say that "PANS cannot RECREATE that unique TRINIDAD CALYSPO FLAVOR that comes from BRASS."….look again at the video from the prelims in Phase II's panyard ….look at the woman's with her hand in the air when the "Brassorama" part was being played…what was that?….eh?...

        • but ahhh…calypso is the important thing here bro…all I am suggesting to you is…"like yuhself first nah"?…that Brassorama music as you call it is played over the common 1-4-1-5 progression…which is is akin to ALL folk music worldwide…including calypso…again…leh we embrace and luv up Trinidad music...
