THE PAN SONG.....

Every season I will comment on the lack of Pan in the tunes that people are making and calling them Pan tunes. Those who can't see what's wrong here are simply disrespectful to the Pan, we have heard all the arguments and still find that if you are composing music for the pan, the pan should be dominant in your arrangement.

Why can't we support the new music that being made each year for Pan? this is doing the right thing. Panorama should always be about the music of that particular year. New Music.

  • If the music does not cause us to "Get up and Dance", and I understand Valley Harps will be calling for this at Panorama   2016, then we will never get the pan-tune right.

    • gerard greene, it is so much better when the music makes people get up and dance, this is the goal of every arranger, those that make it happen get a sure 2-3 points, panorama is not about nice music, it's about who could put the crowd in a frenzy.

  •  Question ! How many of the Calypsos,by the greats : Sparrow,The Grand master Kitch,Blue Boy,even Scrunter had Pan playing in them, and the SteelBands and the public went for them and they were Popular !!! Can i get a count ? Only want to Know, Direct answers only Please ! Charlene Lusk i agree with you 100 %  Thanks for the answers in advance. Respectfully Yours.!

    • Tellison A. Forde, The Pan Tune is a new category that's not even official because I don't see a winner at the end of the season. Back in the days of Kitch and Sparrow the steelbands were more a part of the carnival scene so their music was played, today all the steelband has is Panorama, one tune. I find it silly that people want to create music for the steelpan and THEY themselves are not using the steelpan, kindah do as I say, not as I do.

We have our own family of instruments, we have to start using them to create not only our music but all music.

Our young people must be encouraged to experiment with these instruments.

We are accustom to hearing conventional instruments this is why there might be some reluctance to use pan.

I am not buying into the steelband and music band evolve into a DJ.

    • Tellison: You should use that question to start a NEW TOPIC!!!

  • I Concur Glen Roy !
  • This i strongly believe.

"Pan on the Road" in the traditional sense is art , with its own beauty and limitations.

A well organized steelband on the move is an object of art and beauty, and should be treated as such.

Many of us on this forum have never really experienced it , cannot appreciate the artistry , and think of the steelband only in financial and technical terms.

If the beauty of the mobile steelband had been realized and appreciated as art , maybe attempts may have been made to improve and preserve it

  • Mr.Patric Ramdoo you are on point, and so is Mr.Glenroy Joseph, some of those so called icons abandoned ship for the love of money and fabricate lame excuses and blame the system in reality they are ashamed for the guilt of greed, and the blame continues to focus on Pan Trinbago and the Government. Check the history of the culprits and you will see greed ,self, and disrespect to the pan men who they could of take advantage of and their good nature, this has forced the young pan players of today to hustle, so don't blame them, blame the exploiters, and last but not least, the critics usually target the individual and his position which he seeks to do the same thing. They sold their souls cheap, and is left with a shamed Body and now trying to mamaguy the Culture, Tell them i say so !!

  • "Four million to build it strong, two million to break it down...", pan song in one breath.  That is why Kitch and the "sweet pan" composers always got it right.  Melody, lyrics, political commentaryand cultural relevance in a  single package.

  • Cecil My Bro. You Made a Salient Point. This is what I will Say. The Problems with these New Pan Songs are they are Not Melodious as The Song of the Past. Not to Long ago Calypsonians and their Composers and Arrangers never Really used to Compose Songs for the Pan, Yet they Were Filled With Sweet Melodies. Kitch is the Main Calypsonians that Had the Pan in Mind when He was Composing. When You Listen to Pieces Like Rebecca - Natasha - Party Tonight- Queen of the Bands - Gold - Soucouya  even In My House. These Pieces Never Mentioned Pan but because of their Sweet Melodies they Became Hits. The Problem Now with Pan Tunes is not Much attention is Given to Melodies. Too Much Drum Machines Now. That's the Problem.
