Who does this concern?

Where is the History of the steelpan, the arrangers and tuners in schools, the communities? It is not just about going into a room and learning to play different scales. Being able to know where this instrument came from, who played the first pan and so on would give the young steelpan players the assortment to enjoy, love and respect the National instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. Who out there cares about this? It would be sad to see the beauty of this instrument be stagnant and just there only for carnival  (keeping in mind it may not be in the future because to some the steelpan is the chill out time (boring).

  • Good topic Venice.

Kim do you know if your books are used in pan in schools classrooms?

  • The course that is at Villanova University on July 22nd not only incorporates the fundamentals of music of the art form but the history of the instrument. There is an extensive discussion of the pioneers of pan and their place in the creation of pan. We must keep the heritage of the instrument and the founding fathers of the instrument in any discussion of the art form.
    • John Mark - can anyone attend this course?  I looked it up and it says the July 22-26 course is in the Bronx?  Is that right?

I live near Villanova Univ. in PA and i would **LOVE** to take this course  -- if it is in the regular Villanova location, and if it's open to non-matriculated students, or offerred as an audited course/continuing education -- can you advise?  thanks! .

  • The history of pan and its inventors is very important.....mother always said -know where you came from it will make where you going a lot easier to get there..knowing the history of the Pan and the life and times of what was happening socially around the time of its invention helps young pannists to appreciate the pan so much more. The facts that surround the invention of Steel Pan usually gives kids - especially urban kids lots of confidence that out of urban struggle came a beautiful, sleek, simple designed acoustic instrument that they can be proud of playing. I also advocate listening to old pan recordings of what pan sounded like back in the day - it give you an appreciation for how far Pan technology has come.

  • Do you want more?

    • You've more than done your part, Kim. The steel pan world owes you an immense debt for your work, and your contributions.

      Thank you.

    • Boss postings Kim!!!  Curious, is there a Central Repository within/without this WST forum where one can find a complete listing of all the literature and film published on the steelpan/steeldrum???
