The Catonsville High School Steel Band, which began in May 1991, was the first public school steel band program in the state.

Through the years, many internationally-renowned pan (steel drum) greats, including Ray Holman, Andy Narell and Ken “The Professor" Philmore, have worked with the BCPS steel bands. Local pan players, such as Emrold Gray and Edison Holder, also have been great resources to the bands.
