The 2013 Great Lakes Steelpan Festival is being planned by Denette Lynch (plays lead pan in Duluth, MN) and Matt Potts (a NIU pan/engineering graduate and owner of The Steelpan Store from Crystal Lake, IL). The two met at the 2012 PANorama Caribbean Music Festival in VA Beach. After the event, through a few emails, they both agreed that there was a void in educational steelpan events, so they decided to start one. This is the first annual event and will take place in Crystal Lake, IL on April 13, 2013. This festival will emphasize educating all participants on various aspects of the steelpan including it’s rich history, playing techniques and even touch on the basics on building and tuning.
The inaugural year brings clinicians Clyde "Lightning" George, Gary Gibson, and Ellie Mannette to help spread pan education. The event will consist of one on one clinics with participating bands, workshops by the clinicians, and an evening concert featuring all the guest artists performing individually and together.
