What began in the 1960s as a local children's street fair to help bring the community together in a climate of racial tension, has become so popular, today it is deemed Europe's largest street event, attracting over a million people from all over the globe.
For more than 50 years NHC has brought a vibrant celebration of the Caribbean Carnival Arts to the streets of London, with a colourful mas band parade, bass-heavy sound systems, traditional steelbands, live stages (with performances from renowned Calypsonians, alongside big name chart topping acts), and over 300 food stalls providing food from around the world with the main focus on Caribbean cuisine.
Despite its growth from small street fair to a globally recognised world class event, Carnival's original core values of inclusivity, unity and togetherness remain the same. Its creative arts are still led by a community of passionate and dedicated artisans, accomplished musicians and volunteers who work together throughout the year to create magic over the August Bank Holiday.
Carnival is a unique event. It is free to attend, is organised by the community with support from key strategic partners, and yet whilst it is estimated to generate *£143 million for London's economy its organisers have a 'not for profit' policy.

*figure based on a 2004 GLA Strategic Review estimate of £93 million, with inflation.
