$47M to fix Pan HQ - Trinidad

Trinidad Newsday

by Sean Douglas - Sunday, April 6 2014

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Housing Minister, Dr Roodal Moonilal, said it will take $47 million to fix the incomplete Pan Trinbago headquarters on the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway.

Speaking on the Finance Bill 2014 last Friday night in the Lower House, Moonilal scoffed that the building had originally been designed to hold two storeys but that someone had decided to insert an extra floor without raising the roof.

Describing the structure as a “two-and-a-half storey” building, he said the project had never got approval from WASA, so to date a sewer system cannot be installed and the building remains without any water connection or drains.

  • Scrap the damn thing and move it to the city (see Cecil's suggestion). Too much talk, talk, talk. talk, talk.

  • If they can spend 71 million to just outfit 1 Alexandra St., a building that is completely finished, then 47 million to basically rebuild and refit the entire headquarters is nothing at all. After all just paving a parking lot now costs 4 million.

My question is where are these costs coming from and where is the money going?

When the PP came into power and Manning asked questions about the palace the Prime minister was building in Phillipine, she responded that it cost 3.5 million tops, so what happened to building costs since the government has been in power.

Everything now costs 10 times as much.

The Highway to Point Fortin is estimated to cost 7.5 billion dollars, more than half of what it cost the US to go to Mars. Twice what it cost Jamaica to build 5 times as long a highway (that's 10 times the cost) with money borrowed from Trinidad (and they don't have a pitch lake).

The low bidder for the redundant water recycling plant is dismissed because their price was deemed to be too low.

So 47 million to fix a small building is par for the cost, but it's anybody's guess what the final price will be and who will be getting the money to build it. But they will be able to boast that they gave 47 million for pan.

    Nuff said.

    • We certainly hope that the final price would not be the vicinity of Tarouba's.

    • So what say you about the Pan Trinbago headquarters?

  • $47 million to fix that cow shed ?  Why not leave it and build something around the savannah where you need it, or here's a good idea, since they're not doing anything with the school up at Mt. St. Benedict, why not use it for a PanTrinbago Headquarters and museum for the pan !

  • The government could take  the back the property that they gave to Phase ll and construct a building for $27M  for PT and save $20M.

    • Now yuh talkin' Cecil.

    • THIS PACK OF MISFIT KNOWN AS''THE GOVERNMENT ''IS NOT INTERESTED IN THE CULTURE.ONLY THE ''SITA & DABLA.,KATHO,TUMBI,DILRUBA ETC. ALMOST EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD HAS EMBRACE ''OUR STEELBAND'' WITH PRIDE AND GUSTO. ANYTHING AFRO SEEMS TO BE A THREAT.    .

      • The previous "pack of misfit(s) did not build Pan Trinbago's headquarters either. Please explain why or why not. Please feel free to use the terms "sita" table etc etc  eh Helen?
