  • Once this launch+fundraiser is over and there is enough documentation to show GRAND SUPPORT for the organization, I would encourage the XL4PAN administration to refine a simpler mission statement for public consumption. I will also repeat my call for a MARKETING AGENT who could open doors (I have already provided a profile of what this person should represent socially -- politically correct or not, this is TRINIDAD we are talking about) and get a local company or two to fund a couple of your early projects (especially a decent PAN CD).

  • Stephen, it would seem that the mission of the organization would be to promote and support the further growth and development of the Steelpan as a global creative industry as stated below.

    • Bertel, thanks for our concise response. However, it raises several questions. But I earlier posted this response on a similar subject. I'd like your opinion on my opinion. In my opinion, one of the main reasons why few Pan Players can earn a living playing this wonderful instrument is, we hold Pan too close to our vests. Too many Pan Lovers/Players tend to reject the idea that other communities should play Pan, as just another musical instrument. I believe that Pan should be included in all genre of music, not just as a Soloist or Steel Band, but should be played in Country & Western Music, Hip Hop, Jazz (which it already is), Rock, Classical Orchestras, Reggae, in other words, all genre of music. It is a musical instrument and must be regarded and treated as such.
Yes!. Continuing the traditional playing of Pan is essential, but by limiting Pan to this particular category, is what I believe has stymied Pan's progress.
US Colleges have Pan Sides, with accredited college degrees of Pan as their musical instrument. This presents a fantastic opportunity to implement my opinion.
I later added this caveat. Another way for Pan to be properly promoted, is for recording contracts to be signed with major Labels, and promoted as these Labels would promote any other Artist or musical genre, including appearing in major venues worldwide, and having music aired on major media outlets, especially on radio.
I don't have all of the answers, but I believe these are steps which can be taken to export and expand this culture in a manner to open up the doors for careers in this field. Would love to hear what you and others think. Good or bad.

      • Mr. Stephen Howard: If you promise to stick around on the forum I will respond to your queries and positions. Very often people come on and take one shot and disappear and it foolish to engage them and alienate the regulars. All I will say is that NOT EVERYBODY DRINK THE PAN RUM.

      • Thank you for articulating the very sentiments that pioneered the XL4Pan organization. You are spot on when you espressed your opinion that" we hold Pan too close to our vests......It is a musical instrument and must be regarded and treated as such'.

On e of the first practices XL4Pan has adopted is to refer to 'pan men' as 'pan musicians".The former title carried the stigma of a marginalized social group who to be treated with disinterest during the year except  during Panorama and Carnival. The latter  is all encompassing and elevates the artistes to a more respectable level of appreciation,  to be treasured as part of the community of music creators on an instrument that holds recognition as the 'national instrument'. So yes more needs to be done in assisting the pan musicians( all who participate in the music of pan-sinkers, tuners, composers, arrangers , players and more).

Part of the vision of XL4PAn is to facilitate pan musicians to play wherever, and with whomever in the world they desire  to do so and be equitably remunerated. For this dream to realise they need tangible support, vision and planning.

And when they  have fulfilled their divine pupose as musicians, and can no longer deliverin their former capacities, they deserve care during the waning phases of life. With careful expert planning this is feasible.

XL4Pan is prepared to explore avenues outside of T&T that have not been pursued on behalf of pan musicians, in industries that would be a good match for Pan musicians and the pan instrument. Too much to go into on this forum.

XL4Pan welcomes the expertise of Arts and Media marketers who are willing to lend their expertise as we launch out onto the new horizons for Pan and our talented Pan community who are poised to explore these horizons.

I call on the expats who are skilled in Arts Marketing, Agenting and Fundraising to contact Bertel or myself in regard to assisting XL4Pan in championing this worthy cause.

Stephen and Cecil thanks for your pithy remarks that can further this discussion of assisting this noteworthy cause.

'They don't care about what you know until they know that you care.'

      • Stephen Howard, it is my opinion that whenever pan is used with conventional instruments it's mostly the lead pans, I think we have to explore every genre of music using the pan family and create a market for today pan music, we cannot wait for others to do it. Pan is there for everyone to use, I am just stating what has to be done to take it to the next level.

        • Cecil: After seeing what Patrice Millien is doing with the The "RIDDIM" (a soca R&B cross over riddim which will appeal to a wide cross section of followers) I am giving up any hope of expecting to hear any decent PAN MUSIC ever coming out of Trinidad. After reading about her vision and the level of administrative skills she is bringing to the music scene in Trinidad -- I know that there is so such equivalent mind in the PAN WORLD. She is the kind of leader that PAN TRINBAGO needs: Young, vibrant, visionary, educated, confident, energetic, ambitious and intuitively loaded with ADMINISTRATIVE SKILLS.

I am in full support of XPATS and LOCALS but I think they are already falling into the PAN TRINBAGO syndrome of thinking that they OWN the world of PAN. Wayne Cezair put up a post recently that I think everybody should read 100 times.

In response to your point: If they cannot record a single tenor pan properly, how are they going to record the entire family? If I ever decide to go to the studio to record some MUSIC WITH PAN I will use INDIGISOUNDS and a professional music producer. Not any of dem 10,000 PAN MUSICIANS allyuh keep talking about.

When XPAT and LOCALS first formed I put up a post telling them that the most important person in that organization should be a young, good looking female with diplomatic skills and a social/family background connected to the business community in Trinidad. Ah see ah whole big management team and I eh see THAT HIRE as yet.

          • Claude I know it won't be long before we start gettin some good  new Pan music, there's  too much  technology and young panist not too.

  • Please forgive my ignorance on this subject, but exactly what is the mission of this organization?

  • Congratulations on making a bold step towards establishing a new pan event !

Belmont and Pan.....perfect !! Other communities should be doing similar projects to bring the generations together to share the love of the instrument. I wish you folks every success !
