Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce was born in abject poverty in the heart of the Kingston inner city. As a schoolgirl she went to the Penn relays in Philadelphia with her high school team. There was a Jamaican woman benefactor there who took some of the Jamaican schoolgirls to a department store as a treat and told them to get some items. All the girls brought back a ton load of items, all except a little 13 year old named Shelly-Ann who brought back a single item; a t-shirt for her mother.
The lady sent her back to get more items telling her not to worry about the amount. She only came back with another t-shirt for herself.
The lady called, Bruce James, a well known track & field manager in Jamaica, and told him she had met a little girl named Shelly-Ann who she wished to sponsor. Bruce told her Shelly wasn't really one of the top stars, but the lady insisted that was who she wanted to take care of.
She helped to support Shelly-Ann all through high school from that moment on.
When Shelly-Ann was 21 years old, she made Jamaica's Olympic team to Bejing. Weeks before the event, Shelly-Ann’s benefactor, Jean, dies of cancer.
Immediately after the race, Bruce James who is by now Shelly-Ann’s manager and one of the TV presenters, takes a call. He returns to the set almost in tears. It was Shelly who called him, and instead of talking about the race and the gold medal she had just won, her call was to tell him to help her to start her charity foundation right away, because she wants to use her platform to do for other little girls what Jean did for her..."
