Don't you think "A Panorama Steel band is only as good as the arranger?" An Arranger can get a mediocre Band, train them, take them to Panorama and Win. So it's not about the Band but the Arranger.

The skill of the players and drill masters influence whether an arranger can play their piece one beat per minute faster or not on final night, which could really change the impact of the performance. There is a difference between players who perfect only their memorization and those who care to perfect their technique as well.
But yes, the arranger can be the performance bottleneck… the limiting factor… usually the case. Then it's judging and politics. I thought Invaders played amazing last night, but cursed by playing in slot one.
Corey, You are right, The majority of Panorama players (even the Crack-shots) perfect their memorization, ask them to play the Panorama tune months later, they can't. So they did not learn the tune they memorized it. Learning is like knowing your name, you will never forget it.
The skill level of the players in the finals was very high. Not once, did I get a sense that any band lacked tempo. The top bands ran long runs of triplets at high tempo across the whole range of pans, which was very impressive… even mind-blowing!
I think the players got the bands into the top, meeting the demands of the top arrangers. That separates the top 6 from the bottom. After that, it's judges.

Bede, It's all about the arranger, I will even say that it is impossible for a unknown to win.
As far as Liam/ Silver Stars, Liam have to bend the rules of music to Win or even place in a Panorama competition, you just cannot stay within the rules of music to win Panorama, Panorama is not Music Festival.

Some Arrangers scared to "Rough it up", they say to themselves that it will not be correct, but this is Panorama not music festival.
