  • For many years (in the past) in fact, Brazil's Rio Carnival studied and copied for development many aspects of the traditions of Trinidad's PoS Carnival.  In turn, we started to copy-cay their modern spectacle into our "Mas", with major emphasis on commercializing the "bikinis and beads" with little import on the artful showcase spectacles and theatre of the past (Bailey, Minshall, MacFarlane mas with steelbands-on-the-road appears to be no more).  I'm not sure how much the road-fete styled presentations will be hampered by a venue which restricts the freedom-of-movement, but the tinkering with mas, calyspo and steelpan that has gone on needs to be studied in depth.  But, as to calls for a new and improved venue, what ever happened to the plans for the proposed T&T's National Carnival & Entertainment Centre???   Will it go along the same path as the proposed headquarters or PanTrinbago???  Seems like we are stalled at more talk than action, pity...

  • This is a very nice design but there is no covering, no much Trini people will pay to sit and bake in the sun for 6-7 hours.

    • Cecil: This parade takes place at night ... check out the lights in the picture.

      • Well Claude, our carnival is in the day and I doh have any problem with the facilities we have, what we are not looking at here is the population.

        • You are right!!! Population size and financial resources. But we could (and should) have a permanent home for carnival and they have been talking about that for decades. That sambadrome has a special section where they have MAJOR CONCERTS all year round. That would be a nice added feature expecially for use by the pan sides.

But you know what I say: Every country is what that country is!!!

    • i've been to both Rio and TnT carnival, and while the Rio facility is indeed impressive, to me it felt a bit restrictive, and it distances you from the activity.

I didn't like having to sit in a seat and 'watch' -  i much prefer Trini, where everyone is PART of the fun, jumping up together in the road, with freedom to mingle and jam and dance and jump   - not sitting on the side  watching it pass by.

      .

      • And this is my point, only in T&T. So while we complain about the lack of discipline and order in Trini, isnt T&Ts Carnival really the Greatest Show on Earth? Again, my question was in the beginning, can we here in Trini really enjoy Carnival Rio's style?

        • Bertel, from the time we start looking at what others have we are in trouble, why the comparison in the first place? it's the Rio style that have women in T&T walking half naked carnival day. We as Trini people have a tendency to be copy-cats and doubt our own creativity and that's bad.
