A Steel Symphony, Pounded Out in Brooklyn

New York, USA - As the sun sets over a string of tire repair and auto body shops in Brooklyn, the first jaunty notes of a jangly symphony ring out. The roar of Atlantic Avenue subsides as the music floods these ragged blocks, filling the grease-soaked garages with a breath of island air.

Follow the music and you will find a dreadlocked man called Bumpy in the center of a crowded lot, leading a steel drum orchestra that plays well into the early morning. At 8 p.m., a few dozen musicians bang away. By midnight, their ranks grow to 100, and their ages range from 7 to 68.
