Let me start by reminding people that PAN and STEELBAND are not the same thing, it is the Steelbands in T&T that are in danger, Pan is global therefore nothing will hinder it from being developed to its full potential and Trinidad and Tobago cannot do anything about that.

The International Conference on Steelpan being held in Trinidad has asked the International Community to submit papers for consideration and they list ten areas, only one mention Steelband.

My humble opinion is that the focus of this Conference should be to discuss THE ROLE OF THE STEELBAND IN CARNIVAL.  Dialogue have to be about the STEELBAND.

As it is today how much of the dollars that carnival genarate go the steelbands?

  • Steelband must be part of the MAS as it use to be, that's one of the reason, I believe that they are in danger.

  • Will a Steelband Orchestra or a Steelpan Soloist even be invitedto perform at the Nobel Peace Prize Awards in Stockholm? Evidently, the Physics Prize has been awarded for both pioneering discoveries and groundbreaking inventions, it is quite obvious that the inventors of the steel drum as a musical instrument met these criteria’s. However, no Nobel Prize recognition was ever given for this unique, modern and innovative musical instrument. The Steelpan musical instrument is the only musical invention which can perform as an orchestra assembles of instrumental voices independent of the widely acceptable traditional woodwind, strings assembles.

  • There is no dialogue about the STEELBAND because there is no easy solution and we don't have the will to put pressure on the powers that be make the tough decisions. If we were to take away Panorama there is not much use for a steelband since most do not take part in carinval. Steelband is suffering from about thirty years of neglect so serious damage control is needed to avert total extinction. Pan is taken away from the steelband and given all the attention and steelband is left to fend for it self.

    • Hameed maybe you should submit your suggestion to the people who decide which person is worthy of their prize.

      • Again, I concur, Hameed and Cecil ... but this position raises the initial question once more ... whom do you think could be nominated as the potential recipient for a Nobel Prize for inventing" the steeldrum?  We'd be back at square A.  Can the Nobel Peace be awarded to a bunch of individuals?  And is there a category for musical invention/innovation?  I don't know.

  • Can your Steelband play the National Anthem of Trinidad and Tobago? For our Golden Jubilee 50th Year of Independence All Steelbands must pay Tribute to the Land of the Steelpan.♪♪♪August 31 2012 @ 12:00 PM

  •  we should never be in this position as  world leaders of the  innovation of 21st century

our so called politicians  have  played with our low  integrity and  hand outs and we still lap it up

     more gallery  and show

we in charge- pinch we self-

do we have  apan headquarters owned- no

     we still paying rent

any serious move except teh last pm going on and on about g pan

this was probably  created by the great bertie marshall

come on people lets get it on and realise  we can and should and hopefully will do better

  • Gentlemen the Government does not make any money from Carnival that one billion dollar is only an assumption, its your tax  dollars that subsidize Carnival. You know who makes money some all inclusive bands, some fete promoters, some artiste, some hotels, some vendors, some steelband arrangers and some pan tuners. I use the word some, because not all the people that provide these services makes money. With out Government involvement there would be no Panorama and no Calypso Monarch and no Dimanche Gras show, it would be back to the Tamboo Bamboo days.

  • Cecil you are going down the same illogical road DIAZ did with your last question. Because CARNIVAL is described as a BILLION DOLLAR ENTERPRISE does not mean the government puts up ONE HUNDRED MILLION and walks away with ONE BILLION DOLLARS after the carnival.

So then according to you and Diaz, the government should come on Ash Wednesday and hand DIAZ and PANTRINBAGO a check for FIVE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS -- half the profits. And even if they did that, do you really think it will go to the steelbands?
