Now here is a direct quote from the musically informed merrytonestothebone (and ah doh want nobody to ask meh whey ah get the quote from because it is authentic and THAT'S THE TRUTH) and ah want him to come and defend it with SPECIFICS because he know plenty about THE MUSIC!!!

"This year as in previous years many many arrangers (to me, that is) are guilty of 'over-arranging'. Not because yuh know plenty it means yuh have to show plenty."

I have to say that I LOVE that merrytonestothebone line:"Not because yuh know plenty it means yuh have to show plenty."

This year the man gone GAGA over the RENEGADES arrangement, which I think is in direct contradiction (the arrangement) to what I think merrytonestothebone is preaching (was preaching). Because when I listen to RENEGADES this year, what I am hearing is a desperate "I will win at any cost" version of a song that throws everything I know about music (slightly excluding the kitchen sink) into this one production to show dem judges how much music I know.

And so since I first listened to that arrangement, I have been walking around unconsciously formulating the term "Not because yuh know plenty it means yuh have to show plenty" until I saw merrytonestothebone express it so succinctly in a re-posting that I was reading this morning.

And don't bring DOCTOR DELIGHT to PILE ON -- eh!!!

  • I am not as learned in the art of Panorama music as the folks who normally take part in these discussions, but I would like to suggest that an arranger who has placed 3rd consistently over the last 5 years (2013 - 2017) in the Large band category should easily be considered a master arranger whether he wins this year or not. He has already won the respect of the Trinidad public.

    • Carl McLean, point taken, but winning the large band is of the utmost importance to an arranger, it's like being admitted to an elite group.

      • Phase II yard on Wednesday 7th 2pm to 6pm. Bring your instruments and join the jam by Douglas Redon

  • It's looking like 2018 will be Duvone Coronation, he finally shattered the glass ceiling,  has paid his dues, earn the title MASTER ARRANGER. [just ah lil humor]

    • THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE -- looks as if he has been CROWNED ALREADY!!!

  • That quote suck. Big time. How would you like to tell that to Usain Bolt? OK Usain, I know you got it all. You've covered all aspects of your pre-race preparation. But, just give about 85% of your ability this time. No need to show what you got. How many races would he have won? BS! You wouldn't advise coaches to tell that to their soccer teams at pre-game time, would you? Unless you want them to loose.

Duvone Stewart have been climbing that ladder competing with the big guns for years and now he's got that lead giving it all he has and no one will catch him. Not from what I've herd so far. Lay it all out on the line Mr. Stewart. This one is yours.

    • Rick when I made that statement I was referring to instances of "over-arranging" (for want of a better term)...Your example of Usain Bolt is pointless here, since he had to give his all to win a race "everytime". In the case of a Panorama arrangement, sometimes less is more...Clive Bradley had proven that time and time again...

  • Claude...the Soundcloud audio of the top 10 Semi finalists the WST posted yesterday should be enough to explain my point. You can clearly hear Renegades several steps ahead of the competition in musicianship, quality of ideas, his stylitic approach to the arrangement, what have you. He is an excellent improviser and he has his charges "playing like him". No other arranger has "damblayed" (if that is the correct spelling) poly-rythms, sycnopation (which is the crux of calypso music) like Duvonne this year. He has always been apt to scratch the last ounce out of a motif and this year is no different. I can't accuse him of over-arranging since his ideas are on point where the motifs of the song are concerned. Panorama Finals this year will be electric because Duvonne has all other arrangers working overtime to catch him...

  • devon has found the formula to win and a lot of people are scared at this time. from his record they know when he wins one more will follow. lol

  •  Duvone style has always been plenty, the difference this year [with Renegades] is how he put it together, he package it nicely.
