ALL ABOUT ANTIGUA HISTORY OF THE STEELBAND

We always talk about Trinidad History of the Steelband, but it seems like the island of Antigua has a lot of history of Pan, Can we get a Discussion going on this? It looks like there is a lot of information that the Panmen/women would like to share and know,

  • Dear pan community, during the ninth century, Guido d’Arezzo invented western music notation. In the twentieth century, Trinidad and Tobago invented the steel pan. Western music notation took hundreds of years to arrive where it is today. Brass and combo bands read music notation to accompany calypsonians. Philharmonic orchestras read music notations when performing in concerts. Police and military bands read music notation in march parades. Many steel orchestra arrangers read music notation to teach pan players their parts.  Western music notation system has been highly beneficial to countless musicians. Therefore, this era may be the right time to redouble the efforts to teach steel pan players to read music notation on steel pans. Here is my question: What are the advantages or disadvantages of reading musical notation on steel pans?

    • CALYPSO MUSIC IS NOT ABOUT READING NOTES!!!

  • Hi Mike, Yep, our discussion (s) are clearly remembered now! I could not remember what they were calling themselves. Have not heard about them since.

    • Hi Gerard,

They were called "Canadian Federation of Steelpan".

    • Gerard, Do you know any thing else bout their Pan History?

  • Bede,

Here is some information on Pan in Antigua by the late Leroy “Jughead” Gordon. He was one of Antigua's most respected pan historian and leader.

The Story of Pan in Antigua http://j.mp/1gR9lUF?

    • I just finished reading bout "The Story of Pan in Antigua", Very, Very interesting, It seems like when ever we talk about Pan History in Trinidad we have to emphasis Trinidad and not the World, I wish some more information from Antiguans could be posted on this Forum.                                                                                                         I see where they had a Steelband to play in a Church years ago,, I see where they had Double Tenors years ago, I see where they had some Players playing with 3 Sticks and  4 Sticks.                                                                                                                                                                             .According  to the Link, they admit that the Steelband was originated in Trinidad and they brought it to Antigua and ran away with it.

  • I attended a function in Toronto when the folks from Antigua formed a new pan association other than the existing OSA and the speaker mentioned quote "pan started in Antigua and Trinidad ran with it" My steups was soft and she did not hear it. There were other Trinis there each asking the other to say something. I will not be wasting time with this one.

    • Gerard, I wish somebody can research how Antigua got into the Pan Business and when, It seems like this will be interesting to know, Did any of our own Trini People went over there and help them, Who and When? Or, Do we only know about what our country (Trinidad & Tobago) did?

    • Isn't it something worth looking into, Gerard? Can we be dismissive of their claims simply because 'we are trini'.?

Of course we would not like to hear that 'pan originated in Antigua', but it makes for an interesting conversation, ent?
