January 7, 2016: With exactly 33 days to Carnival 2016, construction is in its final stage for the ‘Home of Carnival’ at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain.
On Tuesday January 5, 2016, Dr. the Honourable Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, Minister of Community Development, Culture and the Arts was part of a tour of the Queen’s Park Savannah facilities; including the Grand Stand, the in-progress North Stand, and environs.
The Minister spoke with media at the start of the tour stating, “The total expenditure for Carnival this year is just about TT $270 million”. When asked about the recent call by the Prime Minister to cut expenditure by 7%, she said, “Today, the Permanent Secretaries met to further streamline for the cut, however, the Carnival season is well underway and there are few additional cuts that could be made at this point.”
The short interview session was followed by a tour where several National Carnival Commission (NCC) officials took the Minister through the different areas of the venue. Also accompanying the Minister of this tour were Vidiah Ramkhelean - Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and the Arts; Michael Guyadeen - Chief Executive Officer and Kenny De Silva - Chairman both of the NCC.
The Queen’s Park Savannah is the venue for a number of headline events for Carnival 2016 including:
Kaisorama- Extempo and Categories Finals: Thursday 4th February, 2016 at 7:00 p.m.
National Panorama Finals – Medium and Large: Saturday 6th February, 2016 at 7:00 p.m.
Dimanche Gras – National Calypso Monarch Finals: Sunday 7th February, 2016 at 7:00 p.m.
Parade of the Bands: Carnival Monday 8th February, 2016 and Tuesday 9th February, 2016
