Trinidad and Tobago - Alyson Brown MBM and Hugh Borde are this year’s WeBeat Honorees. The two individuals, no strangers to St. James, will be celebrated at the annual Honorees’ Dinner hosted by the St. James Community Improvement Committee at the Lion’s Civic Centre, Fitz Blackman Drive, on Friday 4 June.

Alyson Brown is recognized for her contribution to culture. She has danced her way through life, gracing many a stage at home and abroad. Dancer, model and choreographer, she has accumulated a wealth of experience which she readily and unselfishly imparts to others. Alyson became “Tan Tan” in 1990, the queen created by Peter Minshall’s carnival band, and has worked closely with him since then, taking the mas into other arenas internationally. In 2003, Alyson was honored by the City of New York and in 2004, received The Humming Bird Medal Gold from the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago.

Hugh Borde whose name is synonymous with the Trinidad Tripoli Steelband gave the art of steelpan playing world creditability, taking this cultural tradition and advanced it to an art of appreciation worldwide. Under his leadership, the band appeared on every major American television show including The Ed Sullivan Show, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, The Merv Griffin Show, The David Frost Show, Radio City Music Hall and The Rockefeller Plaza. Hugh Borde is also well-known in the world of academia having lectured in colleges and universities in the United States. He was presented with the Gold Medal of Merit by the former United States President Ronald Reagan for his contribution to steelband music-“the new artfrom of musical bands in the United States.”
