Lately I've noticed a lot of people seem to have the words legend and virtuoso attached to their names. Who is deciding who is a pan legend or virtuoso? What makes someone a pan legend or pan virtuoso?

Oh, come on now allyuh!!!! You all know that a musician's mastery of an instrument has nothing to do his identification or association with that instrument. Legends and virtuosos are simply people who have (mostly through hard practice) mastered the intricate techniques of their instrument. Think!
Saxphones - White inventors - Black legends/virtuosos (Charlie Parker, John Coltrane,etc.)
Trumpet - " - " (Miles Davis, Winton Marsalis, etc.}
Piano - " " (McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, etc.)
And by the way; Black inventors - White legend/virtuoso (Andy Narell)
In a performance at Ellie Mannette steelband workshop in West Virginia 1996.
Legendary status is also a public perception…there are many virtuosos that are not legends...
I don't think that its complicated.
A virtuoso would be a player that has reached the highest level of proficiency , with individual performances worthy of being applauded and celebrated by the steel pan world.
Our friend ODW has highlighted some players who I would consider virtuoso.
A legend would be one of the greats , who has made tangible contributions to the art-form , and who has become so much a part of the culture that he is immediately recognizable by one name or nickname, like for example Boogsie , Ellie , Smooth , Bradley , Bobby, Jit , Jules , Junior , Ray , etc.
Glenroy you have put it out there perfectly.
Now I would like all those who don't meet this criteria to refrain from associating the word virtuoso with their names.
The standards have been set long ago for such recognized greatness in the steel pan art-form.

lol…like who Bugs?…enlighten me…do you know people who "call themselves" legends?
Merrytones I have not heard these people say it with their own mouths. But they are indeed allowing and sanctioning this misinformation. I see it in bio's and promotional material where these people are involved.
