(1) All Stars Steel Orchestra has 8 second place finishes at Panorama, behind Phase II's 12; Leon "Smooth" Edwards has 7 behind Len Sharpe's 12. (Eddie Quarless got one for All Stars in 1994)

(2) The Original De Fosto has 6 and The Mighty Sparrow has 4 behind The Lord Kitchener's 18 winning Panorama tunes.

(3) Exodus was 23 points behind at the semi finals, but came back and won the 1992 Panorama. (Steelpan Ed said that it was Phase II by 21.5 points in 2008. For the record Phase II was only 7.5 points behind in 08.

(4) Desperadoes has made the most Panorama finals 45 of 49. The band did not qualify in 1971, 1974, 1975 and you all know what happened this year.(lol)

(5) Renegades is the first Steel Orchestra to amass 9 panorama wins.

As you all should North Stars was the first to win 1 and 2, Harmonites 3 and 4, Desperadoes 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10.

  • Panorama to my recollection had 12 different bands as winners North Stars; Cavaliers;Desperadoes; Solo Harmonites; Starlift; Nu Tones; All Stars; Hatters;Renegades; Phase 11; Exodus; Silver Stars.

I have 17 different arrangers some of them duplicated or worked jointly with another.Anthony Williams; Bobby Mohammed;Beverley Griffith; Robert Greenidge(they paired in 1985); Earl Rodney; Ray Holman; Clive Bradley; Rudy Wells; Rupert Mark; Steve Achaiba; Herschel Puckerin; Leon Edwards; Jit Samaroo; Lennox Sharpe; Pelham Goddard; Desmond Waithe(they paired in1992 and 2001); Edwin Pouchet.

I have not worked out the singers but for like the first two decades it was a Kitchener/Sparrow thing and later some own compositions where choice of singer changed somewhat often.

    • Hey Gerard, thanks for the reminder about my good friend Desmond Waithe and Pelham working together on the 1992 song for Exodus. You truly know your stuff. However, I am not so sure  of his contribution to the 2001 project. It was also nice of you [I did not put it as I was hoping for a question of that nature from Ian] to point out Greenidge's pairing with Bev Griffith on the winning1985 piece"Pan Night and Day". They both also tripled with Bradley on the 1987 song "Pan in A Minor".   Good reading your contributions brother, from a CIC man to a CIC man. PAX ET AMOR.

      • Thanks Steelpan Ed and Gerard,

I did not use Mr. Desmond Waithe as a collaborator with Mr. Pelham Goddard, because I did not know to what extent his parts were.

Mr. Robert Greenidge had an input into some of Clive Bradley's arrangements, and Mr. Earl Rodney started  The Lord Kitchener's, "Jericho" for which Mr. Rupert Mark got the credit.

I will now include Mr. Waithe. I am a humble servant and will always stand to be corrected.

        • Ian...respectfully, thanks for the brain teasers. May I say that Desmond did contribute largely in 1992. By the way, in 1984 he was Nutones' arranger for the "Oo La La" song by Becket of St.Vincent. I just saw your 'ask' in an Oct.2011 post. Don't know whether you got the info.

As far as "Jericho" is concerned, in 1974, Rupert Mark, a very quiet, humble, unassuming gentleman, was brought in by Earl Rodney  to arrange the song after he,Earl, had ceased to continue, for reasons best known to him. Earl put down the first verse and chorus. Mark did the rest including the intro. I never laid eyes on Rupert Mark again after  that historic winning performance.Yes, he got the credit, and deservedly so.

  • Sorry guys that I was not clear, although I cannot see why. (lol)

You all thought that I messed up eh. Ok; how many different Arrangers, Steel Orchestras and Singers have won Panorama.

    (Large Category Only)

    • My apology Ian, I see it now

    • Ok, Ian...here goes. In the Large Band category:

1.There have been 16 different Arrangers who have won Panorama, namely Tony Williams, Bobby Mohammed, Beverly Griffith, Ray Holman, Clive Bradley, Earl Rodney, Rupert Mark, Rudy Wells, Steve Achaiba, Herschel Puckerin, Leon "Smooth" Edwards, Jit Samaroo, Robert Greenidge, Len"Boogsie" Sharpe, Pelham Goddard, Edwin Pouchet.

      2. There are 12 Steel Orchestras that have won Panorama, namely North Stars,Cavaliers, Desperadoes, Starlift, Harmonites, Hatters, Trinidad All Stars, Renegades, Phase 11, Exodus, Nutones, Silver Stars.

      3. A number of Singers have won Panorama....17 singers come to mind, however I do not recall the name of the singer for Exodus'2001 winner 'Happy Song", and I can only recall the first name [Bernadette] of Desperadoes' 1991 winner 'Musical Volcano. The other 15 singers are listed in any order: Scrunter, Sparrow, Melody, Kitchener, Blueboy a.k.a.Superblue, David Rudder, Baron, De Fosto, Emmanuel "Oba" Synette, Crazy, Anslem Douglas, Eunice Peters, Denyse Plummer, Colin Lucas, Ronnie McIntosh.

      • Good Job Steelpan Ed,

Roger George is the singer you missed. Bernadette's last name is Paul.

        Call me at 316-9483.

      • So, after being reminded by my friend and schoolmate Gerard Clarke of my dear friend Desmond Waithe's contribution to Exodus' "Savannah Party" in 1992, I have to restate my take on the Arranger element to say 17 arrangers and not 16 as afore-mentioned. Apologies are in order here.

  • Ian, I Know that North Stars won the first two Panoramas, but Harmonites 3 & 4 and Desperados, 5 6 7 8 and 10 ? I am puzzled.
