MARTIN DOUGLAS is retired these days, but it appears that he is busier than ever. As we strolled into Ali’s Roti Shop along Fulton Avenue in Brooklyn for a sitdown interview, there is a feeling of enthusiasm, if not urgency on his part.
There was so much to share. Douglas who is the founder and manager of Crossfire Steel Orchestra, and one time captain of Invaders USA, is optimistic on the future of pan. “Brooklyn is high on pan,” were his exact words.
Douglas is legendary in this town because of his skill as a pannist and his tempered and sanguine demeanour.
This is the kind of personality needed when managing multiple interests and conflicts among competing pan outfits. This explains why he is the chairman of the United States Steelband Association, and represented Brooklyn Steel Orchestra at negotiations with Pan Trinbago for the inaugural International Panorama competition.
