  • Mark Stevens Stands To Make $180 Million In Profit If Forced To Sell Warriors Stake For Shoving Kyle Lowry

2019 NBA Finals - Game Three

Kyle Lowry #7 of the Toronto Raptors argues with Warriors minority investor Mark Stevens (blue shirt) after Lowry chased down a loose ball during Game Three of the 2019 NBA Finals. Stevens will not attend the remaining games of the finals.

The NBA is in the midst of its annual signature event, the NBA Finals, but the past 36 hours of the sports news cycle have been dominated not by the action on the court but by an altercation between Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry and a courtside fan.

The fan turned out to be billionaire venture capitalist Mark Stevens, who also owns a minority stake in the Golden State Warriors. NBA commissioner Adam Silver banned Stevens on Thursday from all NBA activities for a year and levied a $500,000 fine.

The latest development is a report from NBC News' Dylan Byers that the Warriors may force Stevens to sell his stake in the team ahead of next season.

A forced sale would be bad for Stevens the fan, but good for his bank account. Stevens joined the Warriors' ownership group in 2013 when he purchased the minority stake of Vivek Ranadive, who led a group that purchased the Sacramento Kings that year. The Warriors were valued by Forbes at $750 million at the time.

With five straight appearances in the NBA Finals and a new $1.3 billion arena, Chase Center, set to open for the 2019-20 season, the value of the team has soared to $3.5 billion, according to Forbes latest NBA valuations. The 367% jump in value is the largest for any NBA team over that stretch.
