  • Since the implementation of categories the attendance to Panorama has been steadily dropping. There is little overall support for the small bands during Panorama season. The Junior Panorama finals is a bigger attraction. Most people leave their homes to be at the Savannah after the medium bands have started, or are close to the end of their category. In other words, the crowd arrives for the "large" bands.

Ask anyone who cares about pan who won Panorama in 2018 and the answer will be Renegades. Very few will say Pan Elders or Golden hands.  And pretty much every year that is generally the case as far as people's memory go for Panorama champs.

The small band and medium category are usually, mainly committed to old tunes and as result there is less attraction for the young people who are more in tune with current soca.  Furthermore, there is no "buzz" or talk about a medium or small band arrangement on the internet, social media or in the rum-shop after panorama. People still talking about Duvone's Year For Love music that he put down for Renegades!

Ole tunes and categories is about politics, securing votes when Pan Trinbago election time come, passing money to bands who can't win (definitely when they don't stay in their own category, they have little or no chance against the so-called legacy bands, or the 'bigger' names), forcing things on people that they do not support, will not support or do not want. Categories and ole tunes is a great way to go from 60 million in debt to 120 million in debt.

    • Well said bugs and I agree 100%.

Given the financial situation of PT and the country in general I'm amazed anyone would advocate for continuing having so many categories of competition. I've been saying for years to have just one conventional panorama, dropping the size maximum and increasing the number of finalists a bit to give other bands a chance. Basically to how it used to be for years already: 100 players, a dozen bands.

And when people say there are all these bands all over the place and what about them, well tell me how many of those have an actual functioning stage side or core of players that can sustain their participation in panorama. When I see a small band on the drag at prelims recruiting players and teaching them the song on the drag just to make numbers, I can't see how this makes sense. Based on that alone the categories should be abolished. But instead, PT can continue writing ten-plus checks to a single player via their aunty, cousin, nephew, etc. over and over again and issue several first prizes that are still outstanding a year later, and cry poverty.

Don't get me started on old songs...
