By the way, odw, I always felt that this RUDDER SONG (It's just a Carnival) was a GOOD MODEL for CROSSOVER CALYPSO/SOCA. Even, today, I think songs composed in this vein with a generic message could be written and composed with a mixture of R&B and some candy-coated LYRICS using AMERICAN PRODUCERS could take CALYPSO back out into the world.
Especially so because a lot of the modern hit CALYPSOS have some nice melodic lines that I think get wasted!!!
All the talk about TAKING PAN to the world -- CALYPSO really has the potential to deliver GLOBAL DANCE CLUB HITS. But they need some GOOD VOCALISTS and they need to come off that LOCAL MESSAGING. Although I do understand ECONOMIC TRAP in which the LOCAL ARTISTES find themselves.
Prior to the release of THIS MOVIE, there was an article in the TRINIDAD GUARDIAN discussing whether or not DAVID RUDDER should have accepted a ROLE IN THIS MOVIE because of its VULGARITY. The article concluded by saying something to the extent that "our boy" should turn down roles like this in the future -- or something to that extent!!! (Allyuh could go dig up THE GUARDIAN and allyuh will find the article if allyuh doubt me!!!)
So, man, I could not wait for the movie to be released. The first day it come out I rush to this theater in SAN FRANCISCO and find the best seat in the house (front and center) because ah TRINI CALYPSONIAN starring in a BIG HOLLYWOOD MOVIE!!!
And allyuh know that I eh in the PAN TING but ah love CALYPSO too bad.
So the movie start and ah waiting to see RUDDER appear in this STARRING ROLE. Ah cyar even enjoy the movie because meh heart beating hard in anticipation. But the movie keep going and going and going AND I keep waiting and waiting and waiting. Well, by the time three-quarter ah the movie gone -- I start questioning meh sanity. Allyuh know like when yuh do ah SUM long time and yuh sure yuh have the RIGHT ANSWER and then they put up the answer and yuh wrong. And yuh start asking yuhself: How I coulda get that SUM wrong?
Well that is how I feeling watching THIS MOVIE. I know that I read in THE GUARDIAN that RUDDER was acting in this OBSCENE MOVIE and he should NOT HAVE TAKEN THE ROLE. And then the movie almost done and I eh see RUDDER yet. I didn't smoke and I didn't drink before I went to see this movie. So I real confuse!!!
Well the movie reach the last scene (that I just posted) and I getting up to leave in utter disappointment!!! That is when I see RUDDER appear on THIS BIG TRUCK in his STARRING ROLE!!!
This is a TRUE STORY, eh!!!
Ah have the same problem with them PAN STARS dey does be TELLING ME ABOUT -- but that is ah NEXT STORY!!!
