Campers embracing the steel pan

Barbados Advocate

Barbados, W.I. - Students participating in the ‘Pan in the Plaza’ steel pan camp are gearing up for the Youth Pan Extravaganza.

Now into its 11th year, the camp is hosted by the Central Bank of Barbados and the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) and is lead by veteran steel pan player, Kently Gill, who has brought years of experience to the camp having worked in several schools across London teaching pan.

Under the theme “21st Century Pan: Moving Towards Higher Standards”, campers have to fulfil two components – a three-week programme, and then showcase the talent acquired at the camp in the form of an extravaganza at the Cathedral Plaza on Saturday July 27.

This sounds like a great program.

THANK YOU to all teachers, staff and parents

who have made this valuable program POSSIBLE.

    TO THE YOUNG PANNISTS:

Keep up the study and practice...you will have learned

a most important lesson of LIFE--

you can acheive and succeed, when & if  YOU

determine to do so and back up that motivation with hard work and practice.

ENJOY  and be proud of yourselves.

  • In the last couple of weeks I've seen a flawless performance of Air on a G String by Renee Ogiste, Mia Gormandy awesome performance with NIU Symphony and a school steelband from Toronto performing in Europe,  I can't help but feel a deep sense of pride in seeing what young people is doing with the Pan.

The Steelband is experiencing  rapid growth throughout the world with young people and it's only a matter of time before we see it brake loose.

  • Excellent!

Pan is NOT being used as "children's godfathers" as someone keeps alluding to, but instead, it's an avenue to harness exceptional discipline of behavior, learning and study skills which the godparents do not do.

This, however, once the exemplary discipline is indeed being taught and practiced.

    Love
