  • Yes man!  What steelband music need:  Less Competition more Exposition/Exhibition.

    • masai,

I think the logic behind the competitions is to keep the bands alive if not quite a few will ceast to exist, this is why why steelbands must come back on the road.

  • Panorama has set back the growth of the steelband both in terms of their independence and their ability to explore their  capabilities.

  • Great topic!
  • Bob,

Great story, Hugh Borde and Tropoli Steel Orchestra are considered pioneers in the steelband movement, advancing the universal acceptance of the steelband and its music on this side of the Americas.

As the times changed we saw how bands like Invaders at Carnegie Hall and Renegades at Kennedy Center had audiences listening attentively to the classics and jumping out of their seats to the excitement of our panorama music. Continue sharing your experiences and wisdom.

  • So what we need is a music with a world beat that will sell all over the world. This is what an international competition should be about, to find a world beat.

  • Come on ya'll !   The truth is that steel orchestra music (as sweet as it is to us) will always be a unique and exotic type.  To compare the global success of reggae and hip hop to the marketing of steelband music is absurd.  That is pop music.  The music of the steel orchestra requires a familiarity with the acoustic sound of rubber on tempered steel; a unique sound even when delivered in musical harmony. Musicians use the term "resonance" to qualify the pitch of notes.  Rubber on steel has an extremely high level of resonance. It challenges the unfamiliar ear. Notice that most of the international attention to steelband music comes from musicians or lovers of global cultural music. Steelband music (as sweet as it is) is still a cultural type of music and our love for it must never diminish.  However, we must face the hard reality that pan music , in orchestra form, will not be a global commercial success.

Now, marketing of "pan" the instrument(s) that's another (potential success) story.

    • Masai,

You said "we must face the hard reality that pan music , in orchestra form, will not be a global commercial success."  It has already achieved a level of success, the problem in the Mecca of Pan, the powers that be don't see its full potential  and don't have the expertise to build on its commercial success.

The issue is how you define niche marketing in the internet age.  Do a search on youtube for "steelband panorama music"  you'll see Trinidad is not the only place these competitions are held.

There are kids who never set foot in Trinidad that can take a score sheet from Pan In A Minor or a Musical Volcano  and attempt to recreate the music of a panorama performance.

PanTrinbago need to step up and create the music products Cds or DVDs from the Pan In Schools, Steelband Music Festival, Junior Panorama and make them available for the global marketplace.  This will be a win/win for all involve.

  • Anyone know of any other up-tempo music with arrangement like a panorama tune?

  • Greetings, In reading some of the comments I may agree with all in part.If you look at our neighboring islands even some of them have a difficult time in appreciating Pan music unless it is played at a slower and more acceptable pitch. Our ears  have grown accustomed to the loudness of the instrument, to say nothing of energy that Panorama playing call for in the current venue. Any one who have an ear for music will tell you the Savannah  does very little if anything for the acoustic  .......
