Carnival Kids Steel Orchestra…

Carnival Kids Steel Orchestra has students from the Lancaster school district in grades eight to 12 and is the third-oldest established continuing steel drum program in the United States.

During more than 40 performances a year, the Carnival Kids Steel Orchestra showcases their musical talent and shows off their Hawaiian shirts and skirts.

While the audience watches the 30 students perform with their conductor, Ken Kowalski, they do not see the many people behind the scenes, working together to make the performances happen.

“We are so well supported here by the Lancaster administration and community,” Kowalski said. “There’s probably 100 people behind the scenes, and if we didn’t have those 100 people behind us, we wouldn’t be able to go out and have fun playing our music.”

The parents of the students are very involved in the group. They handle everything from transportation of students to gigs, to outfits for different events and even drum maintenance.
