Late State subventions delay preparations

Preparations for several Carnival 2017 national competitions and events have been stalled due to the non-payment of annual government subventions.

Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO) president Lutalo Masimba (Brother Resistance) and Pan Trinbago president Keith Diaz said they are yet to receive governmental funding for the 2017 season and the delay is adversely affecting their respective preparations.

“It is affecting us seriously. Usually, once the budget is completed we would receive our funding. Carnival starts for us way before the season starts,” lamented Masimba during a phone interview yesterday.

The TUCO head said the fiscal delay means the calypso body is unable to finalise seasonal contracts for performers at their zonal calypso tents and is currently operating on “good faith” with their suppliers in an attempt to secure venues and infrastructure for their competitions.

  • MORE PAN ON THE ROAD ... Cecil always complaining about not enough PAN ON THE ROAD but look at all this PAN ON THE ROAD even for CHRISTMAS.

Famous for its Pan on the Avenue, The Woodbrook/St James Community Association is having its Sixth Annual Christmas Parade with a difference on Sunday from 11 am. This year the parade route has been extended, beginning at bpTT Renegades panyard on Charlotte Street, Port-of-Spain and ending at Grorge Cabral Street, St James. Steelbands making the trek include PCS Nitrogen Silver Stars, Newtown Playboys and Western Stars Philharmonic. Also included in the parade are 50 Santa Claus and helpers on motorbikes, and a music truck carring vocalist Jason “Fridge” Seecharan and friends performing Christmas music.

From Renegades panyard, the parade will proceed south on Charlotte Street, around Piccadilly Greens, across Duke Street, through to Victoria Square along Ariapita Avenue, across De Verteuil Street, onto Damien Street, then onto Western Main Road, St James all the way to George Cabral Street.

    • Sounded pretty good too.

    • Ah want ah White Oak to wet meh throat

      • ... that is a seminal line/rhyme, Dr. deLight!!! Yuh could write a whole calypso off of that line!!!

        • Claude:

With that 6th Annual Christmas PARADE on the Avenue, slated for Sunday, ah was thinking the line from Scrunter's "Not Going Home" would be quite appropriate, or as you put it, "seminal"...... so to speak. :-)

This is a wonderful season, would you not agree? — peace and goodwill to all men.  A short respite before the re-branded "Trinidad & Tobago Panorama Festival"..........................maybe?

          • My apologies!!! Never heard this 2015 release before (The EXPAT PITFALL). But I thought it was an ORIGINAL LINE -- however, we could have written a much better lyric!!!

    • Pan on the road for Christmas and Carnival is different.

  • What a way to start a business. You have no money and you must wait on the handouts. Meanwhile you are operating on trusting goods and services.
Can somebody tell me, is Carnival getting better? hmmmm

  • Carnival opens with a bang!

Also ready for Carnival 2017, Pan Trinbago Inc will begin the preliminaries of the National Panorama competition, for Single Pan steelbands, on Wednesday, January 11. One new innovation for next year’s Carnival is that the Single Pan bands are being judged in their respective panyards. Small, Medium and Conventional steel orchestras wile also be adjudicated in their panyards, in their respective regions, on February 3-7, and their score sheets will be opened at a special media conference on March 8.

  • How would Pan Trinbago describe the impact of the non payment of Player Remittance for Panorama 2016, which is now closing on being one year overdue, on the psyche of individual pannist?
