Carnival Revolt Underway in Antigua

“if the CDC wishes to proceed with Carnival without a steelband competition then ‘so be it.’”

Carnival RevoltSt. John’s, Antigua, W.I. -A major test of willpower has developed between the Carnival Development Committee (CDC) and representatives of three major participant groupings in the annual summer festival.

The CDC has set [today] Monday May 16 as the deadline for registration for those wishing to take part in any of the Carnival competitions.

....The deadline will affect calypsonians in both the Monarch and Soca Monarch competitions, as well as mas and steel bands.

....The Steelband Association, which signs a contract with the CDC on behalf of participating steel bands, will also not meet the May 16 deadline. President Patrick Stone Johnson said the association is owed money by the CDC for Carnival 2010, and that it will not enter into any new arrangements with the CDC until all the arrears are cleared.

He added that if the CDC wishes to proceed with Carnival without a steelband competition then "so be it".
