Are we mixing up "Best of the Rest" with categories. I recall 5th D winning that competition that was held a couple years downtown and catered for the next 12 or so bands that did not qualify. All Stars ended up there as far as i recall at least on one occasion.
It was introduced in 2004. In that year Exodus won the Large band category with a Pelham Goddard arrangement of War 2004. Silver Stars won the medium category with an Edwin Pouchet arrangement of Pure Party and Merrytones won the small band category with a D Stewart arrangement of Pan on the Road.
Yes, but the small conventional category existed in the 1990's. I remember going to finals competitions in downtown Port of Spain in the 1990s, for pan 'round the neck (as it was then) and small conventional bands.
Correct, that is where bands like Moods and Belmont 5th Dimension had early success. But I wonder if the category was discontinued only to be brought back again in 2004.

You are right with respect to the Traditional Category, because I did not say I was referring to the Small, Medium and Large Conventional Categories.
I was just referring to the word "Conventional", before 1977 we did not call the Bands Conventional until 1977 when they started back with Single pan,
Just looked through one of Ian's publications and found it....2004, Thanks much Bede.
Single Pan category started in 1977 (as "Old Time Steelband")
Small conventional started in 1992
The categories as we know it now (single-small-medium-large) started in 2004
Someone please correct me if I am wrong or leaving anything out.
Kwame, we got to wait on Ian on this, in the mean time check out from 1977 and see,
Kwame, I think Pan Trinbago introduce the categories for conventional bands in Panorama in 1977, But Ian Franklin will tell us better,
