It's a shame that every piece of music composes in Trinidad and Tobago does not have a pan presence, no matter the genre.
We should be more proud of our national instrument.
The late Nappy tried to include pan in each of his compositions but nobody else seems to have taken up the baton.
It does not have to be a full fledged musical accompaniment like the All Stars album here but certainly the sound of pan should be in most music from TnT and certainly every movie that's made here.
In fact it should be compulsory if public money is spent on the production
In my humble opinion, an important part of the identity of "calypso music" is the musical interplay between wind and string instruments, with an uptempo rhythm section Calypso music, like reggae music has a distinctive sound and flavor. and s significant part of that flavor is the musical accompaniment. Using a steelband to accompany a calypso singer may sound fine on occasion , but does not have the special something provided by a kicking horn section , supported by strings and rhythm.
Adding a few pans to a traditional calypso band is fine , especially for steelband related tunes.
While a steelband sound can sometimes be successfully integrated into certain calypso tunes , calypso music loses something if the backup music is entirely made up by a steelband.
Over the decades , steelbands have successfully interpreted calypso to pan , to the point where I can remember old calypsos mainly through my favorite steelband arrangements.
Of course , this argument would not apply if the only purpose of a calypso is to be a "pan tune" , a tune that is targeted more to steelband arrangers than to carnival revellers.

Superb summary, Glenroy. Never the twain shall meet.
But there is a whole lot that can be done in the studio if you put creative sound engineers and talented music producers to record/feature PAN in MUSIC. What we see most often is calypsonians throwing in a PAN in the recording (without much thought, preparation or technical know how) just to curry favor with the steelbands and the pan loving public. Again I say: If people like Salmon Cupid and Johann Chuckaree had a clue about musically maximizing the software they invented (developed) they could be ROCKING the world with PAN MUSIC.

GREAT PLATFORM!!! They have a tiger by the tail -- but can they tame it? If they bring down some African American producers and sound engineers and some R&B vocal coaches and some song writers from time to time they may very well HIT THE JACKPOT.
Now the PAN CENTRIC creative minds on the island should establish a PARALLEL PRODUCTION COMPANY.
Between them and The Trinidad and Tobago Music Company Limited (MusicTT) looks like we are READY TO ROLL.

What's needed today is small sides, [5-6 players] experimenting with vocals, get off the calypso and explore.
