The Cayman Reporter - By Lindsey Turnbull

A brilliant warm-up to Saturday’s invasion and parade, the annual Pan in De City steel pan competition took place on Thursday 10th November and saw Cayman Prep and High School’s Prep Pantastic take first place in the Junior Category (12 and under), with their song ‘People’ by Kes the Band arranged by steel pan veteran, Earl LaPierre. Prospect Primary School took second place with ‘Bump and Wine’ by Spice & Co, also arranged by Mr. LaPierre and third place went to John Gray High School’s Metropans, who played ‘Temperature’ by Machel Montano, again arranged by Mr LaPierre.

In the Senior Category (13 and older), first place went to Triple C’s Steel Breeze, performing ‘Hot, Hot, Hot’ by Arrow, arranged by Earl LaPierre.

In the Open category (adults), Pan n’ Riddim performed ‘Scene’ by GBN Neutron, arranged by Olijumi LaPierre. The event also featured showcase bands (non-competing) Pan People and Cayman International School Steel Pan Band, both playing songs arranged by Earl LaPierre.

Band Directors, Earl LaPierre and Micheal Lemay both received a CUC appreciation award for their multiple years of work in teaching and arranging steel band performances with the youth.
