Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - New Arts & Multiculturalism Minister Dr Lincoln Douglas paid an impromptu visit to Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove’s panyard on Saturday night. A surprised Phase II leader Len “Boogsie” Sharpe and band manager Errol Skerritt welcomed the minister to the Woodbrook venue as the steel orchestra celebrated its 40th anniversary.

With huge luminous silver flags fluttering in the breeze at the entrance to the panyard, a mammoth crowd was entertained by live performances from reigning National Panorama champion Neal & Massy Trinidad All Stars, Republic Bank Exodus, Witco Desperadoes and the host band.

  • Congrats to Phase II, the Steel Bands that performed, the organizers, the sponsors and the public at large for celebrating the 40th anniversary. I did enjoy another blessing of Steel Pan music. Also, liming with many pan lovers like: my St James crew, Ian and Sleepy to name a few.

Thanks again and blessings to Pan

  • Congratulations to Phase II and the organizers for hosting your 40th anniversary and a beautiful night of pan. I was indeed surprised when I arrived a little after 9 pm and saw a great crowd. Many a time, we in the pan world seem to be tardy for our own genre.  I was guilty this time (lol). Four of my phrase, "the fab five" were the night's entertainment; I do not know if Renegades had prior commitments since they were absent.

The ambience was good; I never saw large tents as the ones that were there for the Steel Orchestras to perform under. Exodus kicked off the event, followed by Phase II, then Desperadoes, and last were the reigning Panorama Champions, All Stars.  I just have one question. Why the Host Steel Orchestra did not perform last?

I also like the fact that the only music that were played eminated from the National Instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. I am hoping that this trend will continue. I will like to thank the few members of Phase II and others who purchased copies of my book.

For a little trivia, Len Sharpe has 21 top-threes, Leon Edwards has 19 top-threes, All Stars is now tied with Desperadoes with 22 top-threes at Panorama.

                                                                                                                              LOVE PEACE and PAN

    • Hi Ian,Why the Host Steel Orchestra did not perform last? good question....did it had to do with the people that was recording the band?

I was one of the persons that also bought you book. this is a must have for every Pan student or Pan musician. Just one thing..Probably it would be nice to go to  South Trinidad to get more information about Southern Steelbands..check "Wire" Lenroy"Fargo" Mitchell, Raul Knights, Withfield Weekes and others. They may not of won competitions but there are lot stuff that that people would like to know....Who is the tuner that has the most panorama wins to date?

It was the first time I saw the Genesis Pans of Phase II Pan Groove...In my opinion, that G Double Seconds mayl replace the Quadrophonic Pans in the future which would be sad becuase I don"t know of any other music Instuments being phased out in the 20th Century.

      • Thanks Curtis,

I should have mentioned you for urging the phase II pannist to purchase the book. Thanks again. Okay, I was not aware that Phase II's performance was being recorded. I saw the mikes, but thought they were for the PA system. Now I know. You see, one of the ways of learning is by asking questions.

        • Ian you should really take him up on that...South is rich in history of Pan. It will be remiss of you not to get that history recorded.

          • Hello Ann,

Yes! Mr. Marcelle has a great idea. I will speak to both of you all.

                                                                                                                                Thanks.

      • Birch Kellman, I can't even think of how many wins he has, he once was telling me he was there back to the wins Harmonites got (I believe)..and of course Renegades and Phase 2...

        • I will second that Birch Kellman may be the winner in the Pan Tuners catagory.
