Dane Gulston, no money for players but thank you for being honourable.
Dane Gulston recognizes that October 27th would have been the last day in office for the dismantled Beverley Ramsey Moore -led executive which he was a part of. Every day after that, according to the constitution and Dane Gulston’s recent letter to the Pan Trinbago’s membership acknowledging the end of his tenure, occupying office would be illegal by the remaining six out of the ten-member executive.
In 2018, according to Beverly, after over a decade of fighting to get into office at different organizations, which would include the THA and Pan Trinbago, Beverly finally had her lifelong dream fulfilled to lead Pan Trinbago as the first female president. She, together with Carlon Harewood looked among all the candidates and put together a team they named Team Rebuild which they sold to the membership as the best people to take pan forward. Even before their three-year term was up, persons among them were described and accused of being thieves, dishonest, incompetent, dictatorial and now illegitimate. What is significant is that they made those pronouncements against fellow teammates whom they all previously endorsed while coming into office, leaving Pan Trinbago’s members to jokingly say that Team Rebuild has been dismantled.
Dane Gulston, won Scouting for Talent in 1996. Both nationally and internationally he made a name for himself as an entertainer. He first became vocal in Pan Trinbago’s politics during the Diaz administration, mainly because of the lack of respect shown for players. He was totally against the suggestion by the Diaz administration that players should not be paid. Dane together with other members of the pan movement, expressed the plight of maintaining remuneration for players through the organization called the Concerned Individuals for Pan, which Beverly Ramsey Moore was also part of. However, the pan fraternity was disappointed, with Dane Gulston in particular, because immediately after his team, led by Mrs Ramsey Moore entered office, they stopped the remuneration for players. This seemed to be a betrayal to all that believed in the cause that pan players must be paid for performing at Panorama. The status quo remains the same today, no respect and no pay for the players of the instrument throughout the tenure of this past executive.
Mr. Gulston’s action of distancing himself from the illegal six rogue Pan Trinbago executives continues to paint the picture of a failed Pan Trinbago executive. Starting from the beginning of their term in office, Mrs Sandra Awai, the elected PRO, three weeks into her term in office resigned. Admitting that the president wilfully alienated Mrs Awai in his resignation letter, two years and ten months later was Carlon Harewood, the elected Vice President. In his resignation letter, Carlon also described Beverley Ramsey Moore as the worst president in the history of the organization. A few weeks later, Gerard Mendez the elected Treasurer tendered his resignation, quoting that he can no longer work under the dictatorial leadership of Mrs Ramsey Moore and apologized for being a part of unleashing the wrath of Beverley Ramsey Moore on the steelpan community. Dane Gulston would be the most recent voice from the Beverly Ramsey Moore-led executive to distance himself from the decision to hold on to office illegally. He explained that he recognizes that, according to Pan Trinbago’s constitution, they all were elected for a three-year term and that term had ended. In his letter, he also explained that meetings for the past three years were unproductive and Beverly Ramsey Moore was mainly about causing division amongst the executive in order to divide and rule.
It is without a doubt that there will be more utterances in the public domain from Beverley’s team to discredit Mr. Gulston, as it has become their modus operandi towards anybody, which recently included media houses, who expressed dissatisfaction with her lack of leadership capabilities. Whether what has been said or will be about Dane, is true or not, may be of little significance. Whether Dane was a good ERO or not, considering the hostile conditions he had to function under is yet to be determined. However, his action now is commendable because if the people we elect into office cannot uphold our constitution, our laws, our contract, how can anyone be comfortable doing business with our organization. Members of Pan Trinbago have deliberately waited quietly after the 31st to see if anybody would do the honourable thing and it is pleasing to see that at least one person did what is right. History would be kind to Dane Gulston for choosing to stand in the right. Thank You Dane for your service. Love and blessings to you and yours.
