SPECIAL TO THE LCN

Fifth-grade students from Dansville’s Ellis B. Hyde Elementary School will be featured in a steel drum concert Feb. 8 at the school.

The students learned to play steel drums during Dansville’s Inquiry Social Studies-based Artist in Residency Unit.

Musician Ted Canning presented the program to students as part of a week-long residency. The students learned how to play chords on the pan drums.

The students will join Canning for two performances on Feb. 8. An afternoon concert will be presented for all Ellis B. Hyde students. The performance will be reprised at 7 p.m. in a concert that is open to the public.

Steel drums are a traditional instrument in the Caribbean. Canning has led several area steel drum bands which have explored the unique musical qualities of the instrument, from its Caribbean roots to pop, jazz, classical and world music.

The residency was made possible by a grant from the Dansville Parent-Teacher Organization and Livingston Arts, the arts council for Livingston County.
