Mr. Matthew Roach, legendary drummer
By Aquil Arrindell
Long ago, I learned that when Death is passing in the village, he will take a few before he moved on. I was not expecting to have to express condolences to yet another great southerner so soon. Mr. Matthew Roach, a friend of my father and of my band, San City Steel Symphony. Due to our close relationship, we often played at his Kalomo Kings Steel Orchestra, the steel band he captained for many years.
He, like us all in the steel pan movement, was in a never-ending love affair with the instrument, but his true love was with the drum set. As a drummer, he is revered for many things but what would have stood out to me was that notable funky brand that he left with Fonclaire that is still prevalent many drummers later.
The inevitable end to life is death when your final performance appraisal is given. In death, we reflect on the life of the individual, but it should also give us an opportunity to introspect as to what our last performance appraisal would be.
On behalf of the steel band movement, Mr. Matthew Roach, thank you, and may you rest in peace.
