Sunday, April 7, the Friends of Music conclude their 45th season with this final, free concert performed by The Desert Winds Steel Orchestra scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Wickenburg Community Center. The doors open at 1:30 p.m. and refreshments will be served after the show. Plan to attend this free concert and stay to meet and greet the artists.

The Desert Winds Steel Orchestra began in 1997 at Desert Winds Elementary School with eight members. Since then, the group has grown to 15. This is due to the fact there is an evening adult class in steel drums that has produced five CDs. The group appeals to audiences of all ages and has opened in concert for Jimmy Buffet.

The steel pans or drums originated in Trinidad and Tobago and have become very popular. The pan, originally reported to have been made with old oil drums from the refinery are melodic, percussion instruments. The sizes will vary from one pan to another and may have almost all of the “skirt” (the cylindrical part of the oil drum) cut off and around 30 soprano-range notes.
