Diaz: No pan in Rio

Trinidad & Tobago Newsday

In his message to launch Pan Month on Friday evening Pan Trinbago’s president Keith Diaz said he was proud to see the Trinidad and Tobago athletes parade at the opening of the 31 Olympics Games in Rio, Brazil in their red, white and black but he was disappointed that our national musical instrument was not featured.

Diaz was addressing a very small number of pan music lovers at CAL Invaders Pan Theatre on Tragarete Road, Port-of-Spain. The occasion was the Northern Region of Pan Trinbago’s After Work Lime.

It was the first major event in Pan Month which is celebrated in August.

  • Some people just talk to talk. If you want something done, discuss it and arrange it. This way you can present it at the due time. Don't talk about we coulda and shoulda after time past, like you make a big effort to get it done. This seems to be the history of Pan Trinbago always last minute with everything.

    • Mr Diaz, forget about Brazil, pan on the road carnival Monday afternoon will be more beneficial to All steelbands and the people of T&T.

  • Keith Diaz will say anything to make people in the Mecca believe he takes the promotion of Pan seriously, this coming from the same guy who at their Press Conference….@20:04 https://whensteeltalks.ning.com/forum/topics/pan-trinbago-press-conf... talked about the Valley Harps tour to France, they’ll be visiting some 32 cities and PT didn't seize the opportunity to make copies of DVDs from the International Steelband Panorama Competition and 2016 Panorama Finals available for their intended audiences. What's their business strategy in promoting the art-from across the globe?

I believe if you are 100% responsible you do whatever it takes.

    • ODW , samba is to Brazil as steelband is to T&T.

The Brazilians built that whole ceremony to a samba beat.

If such a parade was held in Trinidad , do you think they would have designed it around the beat of the steelband ?

      I doubt it !

      • Glenroy: I will tell you ONE THING because i saw it Up Close and Personal:

        THEY  LOOOOOOOVVVVVEEEEE  SAMBA IN BRAZIL!!!

  • Sorry , but I disagree with you guys. Why should Brazil promote the steelband?

    Its not their culture.

And besides ,the whole parade was to a samba beat , with token samba drummers after each country.

Got to be more observant , folks.

Trinidadians have to promote their culture , not expect it of others.

    • Well I saw other countries promoting what was particular to them in dress during the parade also, even in the mist of the Samba beat, and did a darn good job of it too! That is what is called BIG thinking! When would we reach eh??

      • Everything in this world is NEGOTIABLE, Bertel. You just need GOOD NEGOTIATORS/ADMINISTRATORS. But your ADMINISTRATORS cannot lead FROM BEHIND!

        • I dont even see anything to negotiate. Just put the athletes in Pan head pieces, and dance to the Samba! We always boast of being the most creative. Yuh think Diaz couldnt think of that?!

  • Go to the head of the class Bertel. I felt it when I saw a number of countries knocking miniature drums. We would have gotten more than 3 minutes "live" as well a being the talking point even up to now. This is where out traditional pans would have stood out. WE really need to think inside & outside the box.
