Disappointing turnout for Pan Trinbago’s peace march

Trinidad & Tobago Newsday

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Disappointing. This was how chairman of the northern region of Pan Trinbago, Gerard Mendez, described yesterday’s turnout for the peace march held by Pan Trinbago.

The organisation held a peace march from Morvant Junction, along the Eastern Main Road and finished at Victoria Square, Port-of-Spain. Only a handful of supporters turned out.

“I would have thought that with the number of steelbands in Trinidad and Tobago, I would have seen a better turnout. It is disappointing. There is so much crime in the different communities that are affecting the steelbands negatively, you would have thought that the affected bands would have turned out.

  • Peace march! What has T'dad violence got to do with pan? These are not the days of

Invaders, Despers, Tokyo, Red Army etc. Trinidad's violence is rooted in social breakdown,

economic failure, a culture of selfishness as well as leaders with no vision or direction.

Those in power are simply 'crisis managers', and they can barely do this effectively.

So keep pan out of this.

  • Who knew???

    • On 29th July the schedule was posted somewhere on WST.

  • I am guilty of not being present at yesterday's March for Peace. I picked up a "Steelband Month Schedule" from Pan Trinbago and was happy that a Pan Peace March was listed. My only concern was the Arima Pan Fest that was also scheduled on the same day, but at 6.pm. I learned about the poor turn out last night from a member of the Defence Force.

I just spoke to a committee member who asked his captain if their Steel Orchestra was ever informed of the peace march of August 10th at 1.00 pm. The reply was no!.

I am not passing blame; let's analyze this failure and try again. Each rung on a ladder is needed.

    • Ian, it looks like pan people don't want to march to Diaz drum no more, since last month we saw schedule of activities for the month, my guess is the Trini people knew also and is just tired of Diaz and his people.

      • Cecil, I hear you, but I do not think that the low turn out was personal. As I stated before Desperadoes claimed that they had no idea of this Pan Peace March. I do not want to believe that, but that is what I was told. If that is true, can other Large bands claim the same. We cannot let this fiasco stop us, Pan is bigger than any organization. With that said, I cannot blame Pan Trinbago for all the ills in our movement.

  • Diaz smarter than allyuh by a mile. The man adding SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY to Pan Trinbago's mandate and have people biting on that bait. Where is the counter march outside his office to call the election before the next GREENS?

    • If Diaz was really smart he would have brought Jack Warner on the march, that would have guaranteed him a few thousand.

  • This is a good message for PanTrinbago, they just cannot round-up pan-people like cattle anytime they want.

  • I don't see what's the big thing here, it's not panorama.
