DO WE KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THE STEELBAND?

In your opinion what would you say is the single most important hindrance facing the Steelband today?

I just read a post where a young man in Barbados ask for sponsors to help bands, this is the same cry we hear where ever there is a steelband.

In the Mecca most bands have a sponsor but appears stagnant like all the rest, what's the big keep back?

I know we spoke about this topic in the past but nothing has change so we must indulge again.

  • Mr. Cecil:  The E-Pan presents a wonderful opportunity to truly internationalize this wonderful instrument.  When I was growing up, organs were huge, with extremely large pipes providing the sounds.  Today, one can walk around with a keyboard, amplify, and you can produce any sound, including Pan.  Same for electric guitars, drums.  As long as we limit Pan to the steel drum, it will be much too cumbersome and costly to utilize.  Mr. Cupid has also made a Pan-App which can be played on your smart phone.  Where would we be if we were still using manual typewriters instead of computers?  You can't expect to advance the product if you keep driving Model Ts.  A bit controversial, but it was once said, if man was meant to fly, God would have made us with wings.  Much respect Sir.

    • Stephen Howard: You read my mind! I was thinking all  week about putting up a post proposing a world tour by an E-PAN band with ONE REAL PAN included. Six man band total. All the ole talk and we still have to wait for some benevolent organization to INVITE a STEELBAND to come and perform. And after that -- wait again!.

Time to take the PAN MUSIC to the world and the E-PAN is the perfect vehicle for that.

      • Claude.

Salmon Cupid the inventor of the Epan has a band in Toronto [TASSO] presently they are in Scotland, every year they perform in some other country.

    • Stephen Howard,

Much respect for all you said, I too think the epan is a excellent invention but my question was about the STEELBAND, not the STEELPAN.

  • A few years a go we had blockarama or you can promote community dances, bingo games to buy our instruments piece by piece. Remember the steel band came out from the community. I remember that Esso Tripoli raise money in that way and then show the sponsor the money we got and they the sponsor match it with every cent we got from the funds we made. This is how  we had our own bus and wielding plant. People like to see someone trying to help themselves before they give help.

    • Courtney: Man sitting down in foreign besmirching the progress (lack of progress) of pan down in Trinidad ... little do they know!!!

      • Claude , I've been "sitting down in foreign" for over forty years and I'd bet I know more about the Trini pan scene than most Trinidadians.

For confidential reasons , I wouldn't list the numerous pan people in Trini that I'm constantly in contact with, but be assured I'm pretty well informed.

        • Glenroy: Could you send me an email: musicfromthetropics@yahoo.com

In response to your post: Ain't nothing like the REAL THING BABY! (LOL)

  • A lack of entrepreneurial skills. This is the biggest hindrance however there are lots of other contributing factors.

    • Randi, what we have is years of mismanagement.
