McHenry, Maryland, USA — A project undertaken at Crellin Elementary School earlier this year is the subject of a new documentary, locally created and produced by Mark Stutzman, president of Engage Mountain Maryland (EMM), to be shown at Garrett 8 Cinemas next month. The film tells the story of the school’s student body, teachers, and parents’ efforts in building 19 steel drums under the tutelage of Kevin Martin, an educator with Young Artists/Arts for Learning of Baltimore, and the owner of the Rock Creek Steel Drum factory in Ocean City.
“Wings of a Dove” is the title of the movie, which will premier at the local movie theatre Sept. 14 at 9:30 a.m. Admission will be free, and the event is open to the public. Donations will be accepted at the door for Crellin Elementary School and Engage Mountain Maryland.
Martin first came to Crellin Elementary in January, leading classes with the children in basic steel drum music, along with the school’s music teacher, Heather Roth. He was inspired by the school community, he said later, and he and principal Dana McCauley had discussions about that initial success. She told him one of the young students had built his own steel pan, in fact.
