Exodus Steel Orchestra - Ray's Medley

    Story Time with Mr. Sanch

A SHANNON IN THE DIASPORA FOR BRADLEY AND HOLMAN - PART SIX OF ANY OF MANY
“Shannon Dudley is Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at the University of Washington, Seattle, where he teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses and directs the UW Steelband. He is the author of Carnival Music in Trinidad (Oxford University Press 2004), Music from Behind the Bridge (Oxford 2008), and numerous articles about Caribbean music.”

I first met Shannon in 1995 when he was in Trinidad completing his Ph.D. dissertation. Since then we’ve become close friends and colleagues; forever engaging our peers and students by seeking creative, interesting, and informative ways to collate, disseminate and share information.

Shannon’s portfolio at the recently concluded International Conference and Panorama (ICP) held in Trinidad from August 4th to 9th, 2015 was substantial. It was an extremely busy time for both of us as we barely had time to breathe. He was both a presenter for the Conference ‘Carnival Comes to the Concert Hall: The Impact of the Panorama Competition on the Music and Social Organization of Steelbands in Trinidad & Tobago’ and an Adjudicator for the Panorama Competition that climaxed the event.

Nevertheless, Shannon managed to share a copy of his 1993 Clive Bradley interview with me. The topic intrigued me because Bradley’s recollection of his controversial composition ‘Ah Goin an Party Tonight’ sung by Lord Nelson and played by WITCO Desperadoes for Panorama 1982, was shades different from the version he had articulated to Von Martin in a previous interview. This suggests that even the originator of a story may become a victim of misinterpretation as time elapses and memory lapses.

Shannon is also partial to the offerings of the lyrical composer/arranger Ray Holman. Therefore, in tribute to these three erudite gentlemen, I’ve used a collage of slides to couple ‘Ray’s Medley’ played by Exodus Steel Orchestra with the Bradley/Dudley story for today’s episode. You may also wish to audition the Bradley/Von Martin discussion through this link and draw your own conclusions.

Shannon, I eagerly anticipate your next visit during which we’ve pledged to create an interlude of relaxation to partake of kingfish, ground provisions, callaloo, and a few ‘cold ones’ at my home.
