Steelin' Thunder Steel Drum Band will play for picnic and concert at First Church in Belfast July 29.

BELFAST — Continuing with the celebration of the 200th anniversary of its sanctuary, The First Church in Belfast, UCC, invites the community to join the fun Sunday, July 29, at a picnic lunch and concert by the Steelin' Thunder Steel Drum Band.

Lunch will begin at 12:30 p.m. and will include a Caribbean menu of shrimp, beef, or vegetarian kabobs, or jerk chicken, served with red beans and rice, potato salad, macaroni pie, watermelon, and a tasty island beverage — all for only $12/person or $25/family.

Steelin’ Thunder is a steel drum band from Rockland formed in 2001. Directed by Mike Miller, the band includes 15 members from Waldoboro to Belfast. They will play an eclectic mix of Caribbean and island tunes, parrot-head, jazz, rock, and old standards, with something for just about everyone.

While members all perform on a volunteer basis, they raise funds for local charities and primarily for a scholarship that benefits area high school seniors who have a passion for and interest in music.

The First Church is an Open and Affirming Congregation, ADA accessible, located at 104 Church St. in Belfast.  For more information, call the church office at 338-2282 or visit Facebook @FirstChurchinBelfastUCC or firstchurchinbelfast.org.
