Friends, panists cheer Williams’ 85th birthday

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Steelpan innovator and former tuner, leader and arranger Anthony “Tony” Williams celebrated his 85th birthday last Friday but was “feted” by his friends and family on Saturday at his Nepal Street, St James home.

Williams revolutionised steelpan construction and tuning with the development of the spider web pan. At the age of 20 he was chosen to be a member of the now famous Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra (TASPO) which toured Europe in the 50s.

In 2008 he received the Order of Trinidad and Tobago –an award which he wears proudly.
