Many of the new courses already are offered at the College Prep level, but Gordon said the schools also wanted to offer an upper-level Honors version of them.
"It requires that these courses are developed and implemented with rigor, complexity, with challenges and creativity that go above and beyond the College Prep-level courses," Gordon said.
Honors designation also can give students a 0.5-point boost on their Grade Point Average for a course, making them eligible for more college admissions and scholarships.
Most of the newly approved courses fall under the category of career and technology education, although some fall under the categories like performing arts (Steel Drums Honors, Percussion 3 Honors and 3-D Design 3 Honors at Stall), science (Biology 2 Honors at Garrett Academy) or social studies (Western Civilization Honors at Academic Magnet and School of the Arts).
