Hi to ALL my pan colleagues. Today, I thought I'd share the MOST credible approach to making a claim. For you who may not know, although I am a music major, I became very interested in my minor field of psychology (partly to understand my own past and present behavior. lol). I was only required to take 18 credits and I ended up taking over 35 credits. Included in my course work was Research Methods, Assessment and Evaluation, and Advanced Statistics. Those classes, gave me the tools to be able to present my claims with confidence, and I would like to share them with you all. The dissemination of knowledge, is what will make US (collectively) STRONG, and it is with humility that I extend my knowledge. (As always.)
HOW TO MAKE A CREDIBLE CLAIM:
1. Make a statement or claim; the HYPOTHESIS
e.g. George "Sonny" Goddard is "THE GREATEST LEADER of the STEELBAND MOVEMENT.
2. Make/state the counter-claim; the NULL HYPOTHESIS
e.g. George "Sonny" Goddard in "NOT THE GREATEST LEADER of the STEELBAND
MOVEMENT.
3. Establish the “ground-rules”; SET THE CRITERIA
e.g. Define “leader” and “steelband movement”, then compare the works and accomplishments of
ALL LEADERS of the STEELBAND MOVEMENT. Finally, decide measurement methods.
4.TEST THE HYPOTHESIS: gather information (data), perform deferential and inferential statistical
analysis (collect, sort and interpret data).
5. MAKE A DECISION (based on the inferences from your test)
NOTE: The “Scientific Approach” will have a “critical region” or what we more commonly know as “margin of error”. Hence, in polls, for example, you would see a + or – margin of error. This critical region is per-determined by those conducting the research, and represents any discrepancy between the scores of the “sample” (statistic) and the “population” or “universe” (parameter). Also, a researcher will run across a study where no definite or tangible “target” exists, and these are known as CONSTRUCTS, examples are attitudes and/or opinions. In this case, these constructs are given a “range” (e.g. from “Strongly Disagree” to “Strongly Agree”), and are then assigned numbers (e.g. from 1 to 5), which can then be used as “raw scores” for statistical analysis and interpretation.
I hope that anyone who chooses to refute another person's claim(s) i.e. accept the NULL HYPOTHESIS to be “true”, to, at least, be sensible enough to know how to go about doing so with credibility. Otherwise, your counter-claim(s) would not be considered as having any merit. And I assume that ALL of you appreciate being considered intelligent and able to articulate your claims.
